Return to Earth

Gana Art is pleased to present Return to Earth, a solo exhibition by Shiota Chiharu (b.1972), marking her first solo exhibition with Gana Art in three years since In Memory (2022). Based in Berlin, Shiota has exhibited extensively around the world, with recent solo presentations at Le Grand Palais (France, 2024), Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka (Japan, 2024), and the ICA Watershed (USA, 2025). Return to Earth features the first showing in Korea of key works previously exhibited at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka. These works continue Shiota’s exploration of fundamental human themes−life and death, existence, and identity−through her immersive and deeply emotive artistic language.

Shiota Chiharu’s practice draws upon personal experiences, including memories of death and the anxiety shaped by her battles with cancer. Rather than viewing death as a final point, she interprets it as a new beginning, which has led her to reflect deeply on existence and identity. The Cell series, presented in this exhibition, includes objects made of glass, thread, and wire that visualize the biological and emotional processes of physical transformation and healing during cancer treatment. In The Self in Others (2024), a series presented at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, Shiota uses anatomical models to reveal two interwoven ideas. One represents identity’s persistence across time and experience, while the other reveals how it is reshaped through interaction with the external world. The centerpiece of the exhibition, Return to Earth (2025), distills the essence of Shiota’s artistic practice. In this large−scale installation, black threads extend from the ceiling to the floor and meet mounds of soil, symbolizing that human existence originates from nature and ultimately returns to it. Through this structure, she visualizes a cyclical view of existence and gives form to the intersections between self and world, life and death.

Moving beyond personal narrative, Shiota’s work invites reflection on the possibility of healing from the loss and pain through art. Her practice navigates between visible realities and the unseen inner self, tracing a pathway toward a deeper understanding of human existence. In this way, her work affirms the continuing role of art as a vital means of understanding the world and ourselves.

Return to Earth

가나아트는 2022년 《In Memory》 이후 3년 만에 시오타 치하루(Shiota Chiharu, b.1972)의 개인전 《Return to Earth》를 개최한다. 현재 베를린을 거점으로 활동 중인 그는 프랑스 그랑 팔레 (2024), 일본 오사카 나카노시마 미술관 (2024), 미국 ICA 워터셰드 (2025) 등 세계 유수의 미술관에서 작품을 선보이며 국제적인 명성을 이어오고 있다. 특히 이번 전시는 오사카 나카노시마 미술관에서 소개한 주요 작품들을 한국에서 처음 공개하는 자리로, 작가가 오랫동안 천착해온 삶과 죽음, 실존과 정체성에 대한 사유를 담은 작품을 집약하여 선보인다.

시오타는 죽음에 대한 기억과 암 투병 경험에서 비롯된 불안을 작품에 투영해왔다. 나아가 죽음을 단순히 ‘끝’으로 바라보는 것이 아니라 새로운 시작으로 해석했으며, 이와 동시에 개인의 실존, 그리고 정체성에 대한 성찰을 이어갔다. 본 전시에 출품된 <Cell>연작에서는 유리, 실, 철사로 인체 기관을 형상화한 오브제를 통해 항암 치료 과정에서의 신체적 변화와 생물학적 회복의 메커니즘을 시각화하여 고통 속에서도 재생과 순환이 가능하다는 것을 암시한다. 작가가 오사카 나카노시마 미술관에서 미리 선보인 연작 <The Self in Others>(2024)는 해부학 모형을 통해 시간과 경험을 넘어 유지되는 자아의 본질을, 다른 한편으로는 그 자아가 외부 세계와의 접촉을 통해 끊임없이 재형성됨을 보여준다. 특히 3전시장에서 선보이는 전시명과 동명인 설치 작품 <Return to Earth>(2025)에는 시오타의 철학이 응축되어 드러난다. 작가는 전시장의 천장에서부터 서로 얽혀 내려오는 검은 실과 바닥에 흙더미를 배치함으로써 인간 존재가 자연으로부터 비롯되어 다시 그곳으로 회귀한다는 순환적 사고를 시각화하고, 자아와 세계, 삶과 죽음의 경계를 교차하는 구조를 형상화한다.

이처럼 그의 작업은 개인적 서사의 발화를 넘어, 상실과 그로 인한 고통을 예술을 통해 치유하는 과정을 보여줌으로써, 오늘날 우리가 다시 사유해야 할 인간 존재의 본질적 조건을 환기시킨다. 이로써 시오타의 작품은 가시적인 세계와 보이지 않는 내면 사이를 넘나들며 인간 존재의 근원에 다가가는 방식을 보여주는데, 이는 예술이 여전히 세계를 인식하고 인간을 성찰하게 하는 주요한 사유의 도구로 기능할 수 있음을 보여주는 증거이기도 하다.
