Lee Walchong
A Way of Life

Gana Art is pleased to present, Lee Walchong(b.1945)’s solo exhibition, A Way of Life, opening March 4th. Lee Walchong is one of the representative artists of Korea who has the Gukjeon National Minister of Culture and Art Award(1974), the Korean Art Artist Award (1991), and the  Woljeon Prize of Art (2001). The artist consistently works on the series of Golden Mean of Jeju Living and has been working in Seogwipo, Jeju Island for the last 30 years. The term ‘Golden Mean’, which is continuously appearing in the title of Lee Walchong’s works, means the middle way(majjihimā paṭipadā) in Buddhist thought which is a life that sees nature and men as one and abandons obsession with anything and does not lean to one side. Through this term, he speaks for the world he ultimately wants to reach and tried to put it into his work.

The solo exhibition which is being held in Korea in five years is consisted of 20 new artworks and can be appreciated at the same time in Gana Art Nineone and Gana Art Sounds. One of the features of the exhibition is there is a common poetic phrase, “It can happen. A Way of Life.” This exhibition title has been in the works since recently, meaning that Lee should not make himself difficult for those who are suffering from frustration and depression due to the prolonged social distance but to take the reason of life and find a way to overcome this situation wisely. The works by Lee Wal Chong which contains the unique atmosphere of Jeju Island and optimistic humor will provide comfort to many people who are having difficulties traveling and enjoying outdoor activities these days.

그럴 수 있다

가나아트는 봄을 맞이하여 제주도의 풍광(風光)과 삶의 희로애락(喜怒哀樂)을 화폭에 담는 이왈종(李曰鍾, 1945-)의 개인전, 《그럴 수 있다-A Way of Life》를 개최한다. 이왈종은 국전 문화공보부 장관상(1974), 한국 미술 작가상(1991), 월전미술상(2001) 등을 수상한 바 있는 명불허전(名不虛傳) 대한민국을 대표하는 작가 중 한 명이다. 작가는 일관되게 <제주생활 중도 (中道)> 시리즈를 작업하며, 제주도 서귀포에서 30년간 작업 활동을 이어오고 있다. 이왈종의 작품명에 지속적으로 등장하는 ‘중도’는 불교 사상에서의 중도(中道) 세계를 의미하며, 자연과 인간을 하나로 보고 그 어느 것에든 집착을 버리고 한쪽으로 치우치지 않는 삶을 뜻한다. 작품명을 통해 그는 궁극적으로 도달하고자 하는 세계를 언급하고, 이를 작업에 담고자 했다.

5년 만에 국내에서 열리는 개인전인 본 전시를 위해 노화백은 신작 20여 점을 출품하였고, 이를 가나아트 나인원과 가나아트 사운즈에서 동시에 감상할 수 있다. 이번 출품작에는 공통적으로 “그럴 수 있다. 그것이 인생이다”라는 시적인 문장을 넣은 것이 특징적이다. 이번 전시명은 이 문구에서 비롯되었으며, 지난해부터 그가 근작들에 등장시킨 이 문구는 사회적 거리두기의 장기화로 인해 답답함과 우울로 낙심한 이들에게 자신을 힘들게 하지 말고, 삶의 이치를 그대로 받아들여 이 상황을 지혜롭게 이겨낼 여유를 찾아보자는 의미를 담고 있다. 여행과 자유로운 활동이 어려운 요즘, 제주도의 정취와 특유의 낙천적인 유머가 담긴 이왈종의 작품이 많은 이들에게 위로가 되길 바란다.
