What Happened to the Soul Food?

Gana Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Jammie Holmes(b. 1984-), “What Happened to the Soul Food?” curated by Matt Black. Jammie Holmes, who is a self-taught artist from Thibodaux, Louisiana, is one of the most noteworthy artists in the contemporary art scene. His paintings portray intimate and emotional scenes of community, family, and tradition. Through his unique use of color and recurring symbolism, his works bring up religious, political, and contemporary issues. He garnered particular attention as his works were collected by several major museums like the New Orleans Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Art, and The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, as well as celebrity collectors including Lenny Kravitz, and Anderson Cooper. The exhibition which reflects the artist’s genuine view of individuals and society will offer an opportunity for the viewers to experience his artistic world full of life, memory, and ideas. It is a first solo exhibition of Jamie Holmes in Asia.

What Happened to the Soul Food?

가나아트는 큐레이터 맷 블랙(Matt Black)과의 협업을 통해 동시대 미술 현장의 블루칩으로 부상한 제이미 홈즈(Jammie Holmes, b. 1984-)의 개인전, 《What Happened to the Soul Food?》를 개최한다. 제이미 홈즈는 루이지애나주의 티보도(Thibodaux) 출신의 독학 화가로, 그가 나고 자란 최남동부 지역(Deep South)의 일상을 소재로 한 회화와 조지 플로이드(George Floyd) 사건을 직접적으로 언급한 공공미술을 통해 현시대와 맞닿아 있는 메시지를 전달하는 작업 활동을 하고 있다. 뉴올리언스 미술관(New Orleans Museum of Art), 달라스 미술관(Dallas Museum of Art), 휴스턴 미술관(The Museum of Fine Arts Houston) 등의 유수 미술관은 물론, 레니 크라비츠(Lenny Kravitz), 앤더슨 쿠퍼(Anderson Cooper)와 같은 저명인사들에 의해 소장되며, 그의 작품은 미술계의 뜨거운 화두로 떠올랐다. 이처럼 동시대 미술계의 화제의 중심에 서있는 작가의 신작을 선보이는 이번 전시는 그의 아시아 첫 개인전이라는 점에서 더욱 주목할 만하다. 개인과 사회에 대한 진실된 시선이 담긴 제이미 홈즈의 작품이 선보이는 이번 개인전이 앞으로도 더욱 다양한 도전을 할 작가의 작업 세계를 경험하는 자리가 될 것이라 기대한다.
