An Sungha (b. 1977) paints everyday objects such as candy, cigarette butts and corks in glass bottles, realistically on the canvas. Candy, cigarettes and liquor are tools giving psychological comfort to the contemporary human living in complex modern society. The dark side, however, is that all these substances are harmful to the health. The artist focuses on this ambivalence. Her subject matter is ambivalent symbols that connect the realms of the ordinary and the extraordinary. In addition to the symbolic meaning of the subject matter, the artist’s work itself carries ambivalence as well. The images, minutely described, embodied in her large canvases, sometimes measuring longer than 2m in length, are magnifications of the original objects’ sizes by tens or even hundreds of times. From a distance the works seem like photographs, but from close up the forms of the objects disappear and only the hues and traces of brushwork remain, transforming them into abstract images. This gives one the strange experience of realistic feeling and dreamlike sensation intersecting at the border between the figurative and the non-figurative. In the works of An Sungha, which reflect the reality of weariness existing within sweetness, appreciators find universal life on the one hand, and experience individual daily life on the other.

일상적인 사물들을 캔버스에 사실적으로 그려내는 안성하(b. 1977)는 유리병 안에 담긴 사탕, 담배꽁초 그리고 코르크 마개들을 작업의 소재로 활용한다. 사탕과 담배, 술은 오늘날 복잡한 현대사회 속에서 살아가는 현대인에게 심리적 위안을 주는 도구다. 그러나 이들은 모두 건강에 해롭다는 또 다른 이면을 지니기도 한다. 작가는 이러한 양면성에 집중했다. 이 소재들은 일상과 탈일상의 경계를 잇는 양가적인 상징물인 것이다. 소재의 상징적 의미 외에도 그녀의 작업 또한 양면성을 띤다. 2m 이상 크기의 거대한 캔버스에 구현되는 그녀의 작품 속 대상들은 실제 실물보다 몇 십 배 혹은 몇 백 배로 확대되었다. 작품은 멀리서 보면 사진처럼 다가오지만 가까이 서면 사물의 형태는 사라지고 색채와 붓질의 흔적만 남게 되어 추상의 이미지로서 자리한다. 이에 따라 우리는 구상과 비구상의 경계에서 현실적인 느낌과 몽환적인 감각이 교차되는 묘한 경험을 하게 된다. 달콤한 속에 고단함이 있는 현실이 그대로 반영된 안성하의 작품에서 감상자들은 보편적인 삶을 찾기도 한편으로는 개인의 일상을 경험하기도 하는 것이다.
