An Sungha
Unseen

Gana Art is pleased to announce Unseen, a solo exhibition of An Sungha (b. 1977), who stimulates our senses through everyday objects. This exhibition will be held two years after the solo show at Gana Art Sounds in 2021 and introduces new paintings created by An, taking a retrospective look at her previous works while completing Doctorate Course in the Department of Fine Arts at Hongik University. Focusing on her large-scale canvas works, which could not be seen in recent exhibitions, Gana Art presents the artistic journey An has taken so far and the future direction together.

An paints small daily items such as candies, cigarette butts, corks, and soap on the canvas by enlarging them dozens or even hundreds of times of the actual scales. Her works, which are so close-up that the human eye cannot capture the entire feature at once, provide the viewers with a haptic visual experience by inducing them to contact the subject’s surface with their eyes while passing by the works. As a result, viewers could fully focus on the painting and contemplate the essentials of the objects that are usually overlooked. An’s works, which look realistically reproduced like a photograph when viewed from a distance, become blurred as the viewer approaches the canvas, and an abstract plate made up of traces of color takes its place. The ambiguous style of figurative and abstract further imprints the two-sided attributes of the object An draws, both sweet and addictive, clean and polluted. As the title of this exhibition Unseen, what viewers finally see through An’s works is not simply the object that exists around us, but the invisible essence of the object.

가나아트는 일상적 사물을 통해 우리의 감각을 자극하는 안성하(An Sungha, b. 1977)의 개인전 《Unseen》을 개최한다. 본 전시는 2021년 가나아트 사운즈에서의 전시 이후 2년 만에 열리는 개인전으로, 홍익대학교 미술학과 박사과정을 수료한 작가가 오랜 학업을 마무리하는 단계에서 자신의 전 작업을 회고하며 제작한 신작들을 소개하는 자리이다. 최근 전시에서는 만나볼 수 없었던 그의 대형 캔버스 작업을 위주로, 지금까지 안성하가 걸어온 예술적 행보와 앞으로 나아갈 방향을 함께 조망하고자 한다.

안성하는 사탕과 담배꽁초, 코르크 마개와 비누 같은 작은 일상품을 실물의 몇십 배 혹은 몇백 배로 확대하여 화면에 담아낸다. 사람의 시선으로는 화면 전체를 한 번에 담을 수 없을 정도로 클로즈업된 그의 작품은 보는 이에게 대상에 근접하여 눈으로 표면을 스치 바라보는 촉각적 시각의 경험을 선사한다. 우리는 그의 화면에 오롯이 집중하면서 평소 무심코 지나쳤던 사물들의 본질에 대해 비로소 생각해 보게 된다. 멀리서 볼 때는 마치 사진처럼 사실적으로 재현된 듯 보이는 그의 작품은 캔버스에 가까이 다가갈수록 구체적인 형태의 윤곽선이 희미해지고 색채의 흔적만이 남은 추상화된 화면으 자리 잡는데, 구상과 추상이 한 화면에 교차하는 모호하고도 이중적인 느낌은 그가 그려내는 사물들의 달콤하면서도 중독적이고, 깨끗하면서도 오염된 양면적인 속성을 더 깊이 각인시킨다. 본 전시의 제목인 《Unseen》처럼 안성하의 작품을 통해 마침내 우리가 바라보게 되는 것은 단순히 우리 주변에 존재하고 있는 사물들이 아니라 눈에 보이지 않는 사물의 본질이다. 본 전시를 통해 감각의 경험을 확장하고, 사물의 본질에 대해 사유해 볼 수 있는 시간이 되기를 기대한다.
