Choi Byung Hoon (b. 1952) is an international designer who has constantly explored the meaning of “design beyond the limits of functionality” after Modernism, working to seamlessly connect fine art and design since the 1980s. His sculpture-like “Art Furniture” and objets are portrayed in simple forms, yet have open and organic structures. Working mainly with stone and wood, the artist brings different materials into dramatic contrast to maximize the beauty of the materiality itself. Moreover, the rough elements remaining on the surface of the work and the parts with a smooth finish also come into contrast, thus further emphasizing the material properties. His works, however, are not simply artworks with aesthetic value, but art embracing the functionality of design. In other words, Choi’s art furniture is unique in that it is a usuable objet d’art that is usable in a specific space. Hence, by presenting works with the ambivalent characteristics of art and practicality, he is also presenting a new philosophy on furniture. Choi’s work has been permanently installed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Huston, and is also in the collections of institutions throughout the world, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and the M+ Museum in Hong Kong.

최병훈(b. 1952)은 모더니즘 이후 ‘기능성의 한계를 넘어서는 디자인’의 의미를 모색한 국제적인 디자이너로서, 1980년대부터 디자인과 미술을 유연하게 연결 짓는 작업을 지속했다. 조각과도 같은 그의 아트퍼니처(Art Furniture)와 오브제들은 간결한 형태로 표현되면서도 개방적이고 유기적인 구조를 지닌다. 작가는 돌과 나무를 주재료로 작업하는데 각기 다른 재질을 극적으로 대비시켜 물성 자체의 아름다움을 극대화한다. 또한 작품 표면에 남아있는 거친 요소와 매끈하게 마무리된 부분이 다시 대비되면서 재료의 속성을 더욱 부각시킨다. 그러나 그의 작품은 단순히 미적 가치가 있는 예술작품일 뿐만 아니라 디자인이라는 기능적 속성을 내포한 예술이다. 즉, 최병훈의 아트퍼니처는 특정 공간에서 사용이 가능한 예술 오브제라는 점에서 독창적이다. 이렇듯 작가는 예술성과 실용성이라는 양가적 성격을 담은 작품을 제시함으로써 가구에 대한 새로운 철학을 제시하고 있는 것이다. 최병훈의 작품은 미국 휴스턴미술관(Museum of Fine Arts, Huston)에 영구 설치되어 있으며 독일 비트라 디자인미술관, 미국 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 미술관, 프랑스 파리 국립장식미술관, 홍콩 M+ 미술관 등 세계 각지의 주요 기관에 소장되어 있다.
