Choi Byung Hoon
A Silent Message

Gana Art is pleased to present A Silent Message, a solo exhibition of Choi Byung Hoon who is a pioneer of the ‘art furniture’ and also contemporary design. In the exhibition, around thirty works from his representative shelf series, side table and console series, and art bench series will be shown. ‘A Silent Message’, which is the title of this exhibition, implies the artist’s attempt to make the viewer contemplate in the ultimate silence and discover the essence of his work. For this, Choi uses minimalized decorative expressions and materials found in the nature. While Western furniture emphasizes vivid decorations, Choi’s works underscore the essence of the materials, such as natural stone, black wood, and basalt.

Exhibition is divided into ‘The Space of Empty Shelf’, ‘The Space of Empty Table’, and ‘The Space of Empty Chair’ to thoroughly examine Choi’s art. Gana Art hopes the visitors to forget about the everyday life and have a time to contemplate and recover with works made of natural materials.

A Silent Message

가나아트는 한국을 대표하는 아트퍼니처(art furniture) 그리고 현대 디자인의 선구자인 최병훈(b.1952-)의 개인전 《A Silent Message》를 평창동 가나아트센터에서 개최한다. 그의 대표작인 장 시리즈, 사이드테이블과 콘솔 시리즈, 아트벤치 작품들 총 30여 점을 선보임으로써 최병훈의 예술 세계를 깊이 있게 조망하고자 한다. 전시 제목인 ‘A Silent Message’는 최소화된 장식적 표현과 자연적 재료를 사용함으로써 관람객이 원천적인 고요와 침묵 속에서 사색하며, 작품의 본질에 가까이 다가갈 수 있도록 유도하는 작가의 의도를 암시한다. 장식성이 강한 서구의 화려한 가구들과 달리, 최병훈의 작품은 표현을 최소화하고 자연석과 검은색 목재, 현무암을 사용해 재료의 본질을 강조하고 있다.

가나아트는 ‘빈장의 공간’, ‘빈상의 공간’, ‘빈좌의 공간’으로 구성된 이번 전시를 통해 최병훈의 예술 세계를 깊이 있게 조명하는 동시에, 자연적인 소재로 이루어진 작품을 통해 관람하는 이마다 고단한 일상을 잊고 사색과 치유의 시간을 가질 수 있기를 기대한다.
