1956-

Choi Woolga (b. 1956) is an artist who captures the energy of the unconscious world in his canvases with primitive colors and simple yet rhythmic figures inspired by cave mural paintings, the first artistic act of humankind. Choi, who studied at Ecole Boulle, National Decorative Art School, Paris, and Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Versailles in the 1990s, was fascinated by the experimental and free spirit of contemporary art of New York artists in 2000 and began to focus on human instincts and experimented with various media and genres. One of Choi’s works, the Black & White series that made his name known in the New York art scene, features materials such as fishbowls, dogs, wine bottles, and flowers freely arranged without any rules on a black and white background that each symbolizes the cosmos and the source of light, emitting primitive vitality, and these daily elements are also presented in Choi’s other works, such as the Beetle series, ceramics, and sculptures. Since his first solo exhibition in 1979, Choi has shown his artistic world in New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Berlin. He has recently expanded it by participating in public art projects and collaborations with mass culture.
