Choi Woolga
WHITE BLACK RED +

Gana Art is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Choi Woolga (b.1956-) who applies geometric symbols and shapes in his distinctive images. His artistic discourse focused on primitive and transcendental world rather than realistic representations of objects. Recently working across diverse media including painting and sculpture, Choi presents his mature artistic language, having continued to develop playful expressions based on graffiti and primitivism in his use of colors. With his new works from a series of White, Black, and Red, as well as that of Color Point beginning from last year, Choi applies refined colors and compositions compared to his previous paintings. Furthermore, the exhibition highlights his inventive series of “Beetle” and Ceramic-sculpture. These works imply Choi’s concentration and process in not only painting but “crafting” as he seeks for diverse expressions that show his unique formative elements. The exhibition, WHITE BLACK RED +, reflects Choi Woolga’s unseen experiments and struggles behind such instinctive visuality. It will offer unlimited insights on artmaking and invite the visitors to a reminiscent journey that reminds our childhood play.

가나아트는 기하학적인 기호와 상징들을 이용하여 독특한 화면을 구성하는 작가 최울가(b.1956-)의 개인전 《WHITE BLACK RED +》를 개최한다. 최울가는 사물을 사실적으로 재현하는 대신 원시적이고 초월적인 세계를 지향해왔다. 이번 전시에 출품된 회화, 조각 등 다양한 장르의 신작들은 원시주의에서 비롯된 색의 표현과 낙서를 연상시키는 기존의 유쾌한 작업 스타일을 고수하면서도, 보다 성숙해진 최울가의 예술적 감각을 고스란히 드러낸다. 화이트, 블랙, 레드 시리즈 신작을 비롯하여 작년에 새롭게 시작한 컬러 포인트 시리즈는 기존 평면작품과 비교했을 때 한결 정제된 색과 화면구성이 특징적이다. 또한 본 전시에는 최울가가 처음 선보이는 입체평면 스티커 ‘Beetle’ 시리즈와 회화 작품에 등장하는 동물 캐릭터들을 입체화한 세라믹 조각 시리즈가 출품된다. 이를 통해 작가가 그리는 것을 넘어 만드는 행위에 집중하며, 특유의 조형요소가 집약적으로 드러나는 다양한 표현방법을 모색해 왔음을 확인할 수 있다. 이처럼 본능적인 형식 이면에 무수한 실험과 인내의 시간이 담긴 그의 작품이 현대인들에게 어린 시절의 즐거운 놀이를 추억하게 하며, 예술행위에 대한 자유로운 시각을 갖게 되기를 기대한다.
