Han Jinsub (b. 1956)’s stone sculptures show a formative style that combines the characteristics of Western sculpture, which emphasizes proportion and symmetry, and traditional Korean sculpture, which pursues simple forms and overall harmony. Looking into the themes and methods of expression in his work, the viewers discover an archetype of Korean beauty. Though it is by no means fancy, it is neither meager nor extravagant, and shows glimpses of simple, unadorned aesthetics. Han’s main themes are humans and animals. The seemingly unpolished rough human figures give a warm, cozy feeling, as if one could comfortably nestle in their arms. The animal works with motifs such as rat, ox, tiger and rabbit, representing some of the 12 animal signs according to the East Asian Zodiac, connote the traditional Korean worldview, which applies the cosmic principles of heaven and earth to direction and time. It is also a method of revealing the perpetuity of time as a year goes by and another year comes. Meanwhile Han, who uses mainly granite and basalt as his material, is highly capable of bringing out the original material properties of the stone through his masterful skill. His unexaggerated, comfortable, natural works result from his expressing the essence of matter in his own way, which he has developed for more than 25 years while constantly dealing with stone. As an expansion of his artistic realm, the artist has installed works outdoors in sculpture parks, in addition to indoor exhibitions, thus realizing “art melted into daily life.” Han’s works, positioned at a wide range of spaces, draw warmth out of the cold lumps of stone through soft, rounded contours, thus giving people a sense of composure and comfort.

한진섭(b. 1956)의 돌조각은 비례와 대칭을 강조하는 서구조각의 특성과 함께 간결한 형태와 전체적인 조화를 추구하는 한국미술의 전통적 특징이 결합된 조형양식을 보여준다. 그가 다루는 작품의 주제와 표현방식을 들여다보면 한국미의 전형을 발견할 수 있다. 화려하지 않지만 누추하지 않고 사치스럽지 않으면서도 질박함의 미학이 엿보인다. 한진섭의 주요 테마는 인간과 동물이다. 다듬어지지 않은 듯 투박한 인체상은 편히 안길 수 있는 푸근한 자태를 드러낸다. 12지상을 상징하는 쥐, 소, 호랑이, 토끼와 같은 동물 작업들은 하늘과 땅의 우주원리를 방위와 시간에 응용했던 한국의 전통적 세계관을 함축한 것이다. 또한 한 해가 가고 다른 해가 오는 시간의 영속성을 드러내는 방식이기도 하다. 한편 재료를 사용함에 있어서는 화강석, 현무암 등을 택하는데, 한진섭은 고도의 기교로 물체가 지닌 고유한 물질성을 그대로 살려낸다. 이처럼 과장되지 않고 편안함과 자연스러움을 간직한 그의 작품은, 그가 25년 이상 돌을 다루며 쌓은 자신만의 방식으로 물체의 본질을 표현한 결과물이다. 작가는 또한 예술 영역 확장의 일환으로서 실내뿐만 아니라 야외 조각공원에도 작품을 설치하며 ‘일상에 녹아든 예술’을 실현 중이다. 이처럼 실내외 다양한 공간에서 마주할 수 있는 한진섭의 작품은, 모나지 않은 둥그스름한 선을 통해 딱딱하고 차가운 돌덩어리 속에서 온기를 끌어내어 대중들에게 여유와 편안함을 전달한다.
