S. Andreas Kim TaeGon, unveiled at the Vatican

Gana Art is pleased to present S. Andreas Kim TaeGon, unveiled at the Vatican, a solo exhibition by prominent Korean sculptor Han Jin-Sub (b. 1956). Han Jin-Sub is the first Korean artist to create a sculpture of St. Andrew Kim Taegon (1821–1846) for installed at Saint Peter’s Basilica. Marking Han’s first return to Gana Art in almost 10 years, this solo exhibition aims to reveal the process behind the statue’s creation as well as highlight Han’s artistic world.

“I want to create works that become close to people’s lives,” says Han whose works express warm and familiar sentiments toward life. His efforts have borne fruit with the sculpture for the Vatican, creating an opportunity to introduce St. Andrew Kim Taegon to the world and grow closer to the viewers. Through this exhibition, Gana Art intends to showcase the two years spent working on the statue and highlight the artist’ intense passion for stone through the diverse forms and themes he explores while simultaneously adhering to traditional methods of expression. The exhibition hopes to offer a serene experience that resonates deeply with viewers.

성 김대건 안드레아 신부, 바티칸에 서다

가나아트는 한국의 대표적인 조각가 한진섭(Han JinSub, b.1956)의 개인전 《성 김대건 안드레아 신부, 바티칸에 서다(S. Andreas Kim TaeGon, unveiled at the Vatican)》를 2023년 12월 15일부터 2024년 1월 14일까지 평창동 가나아트센터 전관에서 개최한다. 한진섭은 한국 작가 최초로, 바티칸 성 베드로 대성전에 성(聖) 김대건 안드레아(1821-1846) 신부 조각상을 세우는 성과를 이루었다. 2014년 이후 약 10년 만에 가나아트센터에서 개최하는 이번 개인전에서는 그 일련의 과정을 상세히 소개하며, 나아가 한진섭이 추구하는 예술 세계를 조명하고자 한다.

한진섭은 “사람들의 삶 속에 가까이 다가가는 작품을 만들고 싶다”고 말하며 삶에 대한 따뜻하고 친근한 정서가 담긴 작업을 전개해왔다. 그 노력의 결실이 김대건 신부상 제작으로 이어져, 전 세계에 성 김대건 안드레아 신부를 알리는 계기가 되고, 관람자들에게 더 가까이 다가갈 수 있는 기회가 되었다. 가나아트는 《성 김대건 안드레아 신부, 바티칸에 서다(S. Andreas Kim TaeGon, unveiled at the Vatican)》를 개최하며, 한진섭이 2년 동안 작업한 김대건 신부 성상 제작 과정을 보여주고, 다양한 형태와 주제를 탐구하며 전통적인 표현 방식을 고수해 온 한진섭의 석재(石材)에 대한 응축된 열정을 재조명해보고자 하였다. 이번 전시가 전시장을 찾은 이들에게 마음 속 깊은 울림을 줄 수 있는 평화로운 시간이 되기를 기대한다.
