Huh Myoungwook (b. 1966) makes his own colors every morning, mixing the colors to convey his emotions at the time, and applying them, layer by layer, on the supporting background medium. He has carried out color experiments with diverse media to embody the colors of his desire, and after a long effort, he finally succeeded in creating the sensuous colors that he wanted through “Ottchil,” lacquer coating. For Huh, color is the emotion of that day, the medium that carries the day’s thoughts, and it is through such hues that he expresses his emotions. Therefore, every morning he begins his day by making colors. Without any special formative structure, he has used only the characteristics of color to add depth to the plane and build his unique formativeness. For example, in the case of the work in which primary blue covers the entire picture plane, the matière formed by the light, shadows, Ottchil, and canvas come together harmoniously within the abstract picture, giving it plastic form. Moreover, the viewers discover how the material of “Ott,” sap of the lacquer tree, is coated and demonstrates powerful material properties. The repeated shapes, particularly in his fabric works, also bring the tactility of the surface into relief. Through the labor-intensive process accompanying Ottchil, the artist not only creates materiality and tactility, but also conveys lyric sensibility through the colors. In short, Huh’s work is his “life.” That is because the sensuous colors he makes every morning, and the sequence of labor-intensive work, such as applying the lacquer, stacking, erasing and drying, ultimately represent his life. To the artist, who believes that art and life are profoundly connected, color is no different from a language used to tell his story to viewers.

허명욱(b. 1966)은 매일 아침 그날의 감정을 담아 직접 색을 배합함으로써 자신만의 색을 만들고, 이를 바탕이 될 매체 위에 겹겹이 바른다. 그는 본인이 원하는 색을 구현하기 위해 여러 매체들을 활용한 색 실험을 했으며, 오랜 노력 끝에 찾아낸 ‘옻칠’을 통해 그가 원하는 감각적인 색을 만들어낼 수 있었다. 허명욱에게 있어 색은 그날의 감정이고 그날의 생각을 담은 매개체이며 그는 색채를 통한 감성의 표현을 추구한다. 때문에 그는 매일 아침 색을 만드는 것으로 하루를 시작한다. 작가는 특별한 조형적 구조 없이 오로지 ‘색’이라는 특성만으로 평면에 깊이감을 더하며 자신만의 독특한 조형성을 구축하였다. 예컨대 원색의 파랑색이 전면을 덮은 작업의 경우, 빛과 그림자 그리고 칠과 캔버스 천이 만들어내는 마티에르(matière)가 추상화면 안에서 조화롭게 어우러지며 조형성을 더한다. 또한 그의 회화작업들을 자세히 들여다보면 옻 자체의 물질적 특성이 강하게 드러나는데, 특히 패브릭 작업에서 나타나는 반복되는 형태들은 표면의 촉각성을 더욱 두드러지게 만든다. 작가는 옻칠에 수반되는 노동집약적인 과정을 통해 물질성, 촉각성을 만들어내면서 동시에 서정적인 감수성을 색채로서 전달한다. 허명욱의 작업을 한마디로 정의하자면, 그의 ‘삶’이다. 아침마다 그가 만들어내는 감각적인 색채들과 옻칠을 바르고 구축하고 지우고 건조하는 일련의 노동집약적 작업 과정은 결국 그의 삶을 대변하기 때문이다. 예술과 삶은 깊이 연결된다고 믿는 허명욱에게, 색은 보는 이들에게 그의 이야기를 전달해 주는 언어와 다름없다.
