Kashiki Tomoko’s works exude the elegance and simplicity of Heian-style paintings, sometimes reminiscent of bijinga (pictures of women in modern Japanese art), with a mysterious aura that defies determination specific period. A common trait in her work is the depiction of fragile yet glamorous figures with subtly contorted body parts, and their gender is often hard to discern. These pale, genderless figures, either alone or in pairs, are placed in various locations including bedrooms, bathrooms, classrooms, gardens, and flowerbeds, are often found in intimate and secretive scenes. The smooth texture and fluid lines in Kashiki’s may remind one of Japanese-style art, but they were created using Western materials, specifically acrylic paint. She creates the smooths surface and multi-layered background color throughout the repetitive process of sanding and repainting over the canvas. “Not letting go of the painted figure as 'something different from myself,' striving for it to be a self-portrait, and genuinely appreciating what I've created— the tension between these is crucial.” She explains.

가시키 토모코의 작품은 일본 헤이안 시대 회화 양식이나 미인화처럼 우아함과 소박함을 담고 있으면서도, 시대를 유추할 수 없는 독특한 분위기를 자아낸다. 그녀의 작품에는 신체의 일부가 부자연스럽게 구부러지고, 소녀인지 소년인지 성별을 구분하기 어려운, 무상하면서 아름다운 인물들이 등장한다. 침실, 목욕탕, 교실, 정원과 화단과 같은 다양한 장소에서, 하얀 피부를 가진 중성적인 등장인물들이 혼자 또는 여럿이 비밀스럽고 신비로운 풍경을 만들어낸다. 매끄러운 텍스처와 섬세한 드로잉 선은 일본화를 연상하게도 하지만, 모든 작품은 서구의 재료인 아크릴 물감을 사용하여 제작되었다. 작가는 캔버스에 물감을 얇게 칠하고 그 위를 사포질한 후 다시 물감을 덧칠하는 과정을 반복한다. 그리고 이러한 과정을 통해 매끈한 표면과 그 속에 겹겹이 쌓인 색의 층을 만들어 낸다. 작가는 “그려낸 인물을 ‘나와는 다르다’ 고 밀어내지 않을 것, 자화상으로 생각할 것, 그린 것에 애정을 가질 것, 이러한 긴장감이 중요하다" 고 말한다.
