Body, Love, Gender

This group exhibition spotlights on Japanese female artists renowned for their figurative and abstract expressions of themes such as body, mind (emotions), and gender. These themes have gained increasing significance in contemporary society due to the active digitalization of various fields.

In today’s society, where communication channels like email, online meetings, and social media shape interactions, individuals often unconsciously project varied facets of themselves through different platforms. In such situations, the body plays a crucial role in defining one’s individuality, serving as a tangible embodiment of a person’s existence. Each individual’s physical habits, such as their smile, the way they eat, and their manner of walking, as well as activities like singing or dancing, all serve as expressions of one’s uniqueness, as physicality itself embodies a person’s individuality.

In many aspects of daily life and work, we encounter situations that require scientific and rational judgment. In cases where we need to make decisions based on vast amounts of information, emotionless artificial intelligence (AI) might be suitable. However, humans are inherently emotional creatures, feeling a spectrum such as affection, anger, sadness, compassion, fear, or even disguised indifference. In new situations, we may feel astonishment, joy, or fear. These emotional responses are what fundamentally define our humanity.

Furthermore, gender is a subject that is actively discussed in a society that values diversity. The physicality of women has taken on semiotic meanings beyond mere physical existence. However, recent social conditions suggest that the gender gap between men and women is ostensibly narrowing. Within the context of sexual minorities, queer, and cyborg feminism, there appears to be less pressure for individuals to conform to traditional gender norms.

Through this exhibition, the artists will suggest a liberated mode of existence, where they freely express the body and symbolic landscapes, offering a liberated way of existing that transcends conventional frameworks.

이 전시는 다양한 영역에서 디지털화가 활발하게 진행되고 있는 현대 사회에서 한층 더 중요한 의미를 갖게 된 신체, 마음(감정), 젠더라는 주제를 사실적 또는 추상적인 풍경으로 표현하는 일본 여성 작가에 초점을 맞춘 그룹전이다.

이메일이나 온라인 미팅, SNS를 통한 소통이 보편화된 현대 사회에서 인간은 각각의 소통 창구마다 무의식적으로 다른 자아를 연출한다. 이러한 상황에서 신체는 개인을 ‘실재’로서 명확하게 나타낼 수 있는 수단이며, 인간 존재의 기반이 되는 신체성은 더욱더 중요해지고 있다. 개개인이 지닌 신체적 습성, 이를테면 웃는 모습, 먹는 방식, 걷는 자세를 비롯하여 노래를 부르거나 춤을 추는 등 본인의 의지로 행하는 신체적 표현에서 나타나는 신체성 자체가 그 사람의 개성이기 때문이다.

우리는 일상생활 및 직무를 포함한 인생의 수많은 국면에서 과학적이고 합리적인 판단이 필요한 상황을 마주한다. 방대한 정보량에 따라 판단해야 하는 경우라면 감정 없는 인공지능(AI)이 유리할지도 모르지만, 우리는 인간이며 감정이 풍부한 생명체이다. 수많은 인간적, 사회적 관계 속에서 애증과 분노, 슬픔, 자애, 공포, 혹은 무관심을 가장한 관심을 가지며, 처음 겪는 상황에서는 놀라움과 기쁨, 공포를 느낀다. 우리가 인간이기 때문이다.

젠더 또한, 다양성이 중시되는 사회에서 활발하게 논의되는 이슈이다. 이러한 논의 속에서 여성의 신체는 단순히 육체적 존재를 넘어서 기호학적 의미를 지닌다. 최근의 사회적 추세는 표면적으로 보면 남녀의 성별 격차가 좁혀지고 있는 것처럼 보이며, 성소수자, 퀴어, 사이보그 페미니즘*의 맥락에서는 개인이 전통적인 성 규범을 엄격하게 준수해야 한다는 압박이 줄어드는 형세이다.

본 전시를 통해 선보이는 여성 작가들이 자유롭게 표현한 신체와 심상적 풍경은 기존의 틀에서 해방되어 한결 가벼워진 존재 방식을 제시할 것이다.
