Kim Kulim (b. 1936), an artist who has led avant-garde art in Korea, presents works that deviate from existing values and customs. Since his first solo exhibition in 1958, Kim has carried out activities in all directions, crossing over the disciplines of painting, printmaking, sculpture, embroidery, photography, installation art, performance, land art, video art, mail art, experimental drama, experimental filmmaking, avant-garde music, avant-garde dance, stage art and fashion etc. Due to such fearlessness towards diverse experimentation, this artist’s name is often accompanied by the modifier “first.” For example, Kim demonstrated his potential as a pioneer of Korean experimental art in The Meaning of 1/24 Second (1969), which was the first experimental film made in Korea, and was shown not only in Korea, but also at renowned art museums overseas, including the Tate Modern in London during the 2010s. Moreover, he has left giant footprints in the general Korean art scene and in the history of avant-garde art, through his leading roles in the foundation of the Korean Avant-Garde Association (AG) in 1969, and the Fourth Group in the 1970s. Kim’s representative series Yin and Yang, on which he has worked since the late 1980s, explores the principles of the birth of all creation, based on the theme of confrontation and harmony among heterogeneous elements such as the digital image and analog brush strokes, while criticizing human society for its refusal of tolerance and harmony. Kim Kulim has consistently shown his works in the US, Japan, France, and Korea. Many of his works are now in the permanent collections of leading institutions such as Tate Modern in London, and the Guggenheim Museum in the US.

김구림(Kim Kulim, b. 1936)은 한국 아방가르드 미술을 이끈 작가로서 기존 가치와 관습을 탈피한 작품들을 선보여 왔다. 1958년 첫 개인전을 시작으로 지금까지 회화, 판화, 조각, 도자, 자수, 사진, 설치미술을 비롯해 퍼포먼스, 대지미술, 비디오아트, 메일아트, 실험연극, 실험영화, 전위음악, 전위무용, 무대미술, 패션 등을 넘나드는 전방위적인 활동을 펼치고 있다. 이처럼 다양한 실험을 두려워하지 않는 탓에 작가 이름 앞엔 ‘최초’라는 수식어가 자주 따라붙는다. 예컨대 1969년에 제작한 한국 최초의 실험영화 가 당시 국내에서뿐 아니라 2010년대에 들어 런던 테이트모던 등 해외 유구의 미술관에서도 유의미하게 상연되면서, 김구림은 한국 실험미술의 선구자로서 저력을 보여줬다. 또한 1969년엔 한국아방가르드협회(AG) 창립, 1970년엔 제4집단 결성 등에 앞장서며 한국 화단 전반 및 전위예술사에 커다란 족적을 남겼다. 1980년대 후반부터 오늘까지 전개하고 있는 대표 연작 은 디지털 이미지와 아날로그식 붓질 등 이질적인 요소들의 대립과 조화를 주제로 만물의 생성 원리를 탐구하는 한편, 포용과 화해를 거부하는 인간 사회를 비판한다. 김구림은 국내를 넘어 미국, 일본, 프랑스 등에서도 꾸준히 작업을 선보이며, 현재 런던 테이트모던, 미국 구겐하임미술관 등이 그의 작품을 소장하고 있다.
