The picture of Kim Sun Woo (b.1988- ) where dodo birds are roaming freely in the forest full of grass and flower seems much peaceful. The dodos of the Mauritius, which are known to have become extinct a long time ago, look alive at least on the canvas in the nature without any human being. Gathered together they dance and sometimes become the heroes of famous paintings. KIM encountered the tragedy of the dodos by chance and he suddenly projected a modern man on the dodos who had forgotten how to fly due to the comfortable environment. For him the modern man who lives under the standardized rules even forgetting own desires looked same as the dodos who had degenerated themselves. In that sense, KIM’s dodos are not just cute creatures. And the jungle presented as a background is neither just a beautiful landscape, but it is a metaphor for our society where unpredictable dangers always lurk. Nevertheless, the hope still remains in his landscape with dodos. The artist emphasizes that the dodos and we still have a chance to soar up again, showing the dodos occasionally looking up the sky or flying up in to the sky on balloons.
