Lim Oksang (b. 1950), who has worked since the 1970-80s period of social and political turmoil in Korea, is a Minjung artist striving to express the spirit of the times through his paintings. As a founding member of ‘Reality and Utterance’ and the ‘Third Group,’ which are important historical movements in Korean art history, he has actively participated in the Minjung (people’s) art movement by realistically expressing social participatory messages on his canvases. Not limited to a single area of art, Lim has worked with painting, sculpture and installation, transcending the boundaries of genre. He has also utilized diverse media, including soil, metal, paper, grain and seeds. He embodies realistic stories close to our lives through realistic images and familiar material. The resultant works are exhibited not only in the limited spaces of galleries but also in public spaces such as parks and squares, thus extending their significance. For almost five decades, Lim Oksang has spoken of himself and society through painting and presented contemporary topics to spectators. His works are the artist’s voice directed toward utopia.

사회적으로나 정치적으로나 격변의 시대였던 1970–80년대부터 화업을 이어온 임옥상(b. 1950)은 그림을 통해 시대정신을 말하고자 하는 민중미술가다. 한국미술사에 주요하게 자리하는 ‘현실과 발언’의 창립 멤버이자, ‘제 3그룹’의 동인이기도 한 그는 사회 참여적인 메시지들을 캔버스에 사실주의적으로 담아내며 적극적으로 민중미술을 운동에 참여했다. 작가는 하나의 영역에만 국한하지 않고 회화, 조각, 설치 등 장르의 한계를 뛰어넘는 작업을 시도할 뿐 아니라, 흙, 쇠, 종이, 곡식, 씨앗 등과 같은 다양한 매체를 활용한다. 보다 삶에 가깝고 현실적인 이야기를 사실적인 이미지와 친숙한 재료를 통해 구현하는 것이다. 이러한 과정을 통해 만들어진 작품들은 전시장이라는 한정된 공간에만 전시되지 않고 공원과 광장 등의 공적인 장소에서도 전시되면서 그 의미가 확장되기도 했다. 이처럼 임옥상은 50년에 가까운 세월 동안, 그림을 통해 자신을 말하고 사회를 말하며 관객에게 동시대의 화두를 던진다. 그의 그림은 유토피아를 향한 작가의 목소리인 것이다.
