Based in Brooklyn, New York, Michael Kagan(b.1980-) has worked in a variety of fields including painting, printmaking, monograph publishing, album cover artwork and design collaborations with brands. In particular, Kagan, known for his paintings of first-generation Mercury astronauts, was invited to a special exhibition for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing at the NASA Space Center in Texas in 2019 and received a lot of attention from the audience in U.S.. His childhood in Virginia, where NASA's flight facilities and research facilities are located, inspired him to draw the series of astronauts and rocket launchers in 2006. Kagan's representative work Apollo 15(2015), installed at the Hughes Aircraft Factory in California, the first place where spacecraft were manufactured, is a work that expresses Jim Irwin’s(1934-2012) successful fourth lunar mission. In this work, while revealing the rich texture of oil paints, he created a screen reminiscent of a pixelated photograph by deliberately creating square shapes. Recently, the artist focused on the symbolic moment that transcends the limits of human beings in the face of death, and records the appearances of various contenders such as climbers, supersonic pilots, and Formula 1 drivers like snapshots. Upholding the theme of the potential and power of contemporary heroes, the artist himself does not settle for one place, but continues to explore new media such as photography and silkscreen.
