Gana Art Sounds in collaboration with Matt Black is pleased to present Brooklyn-based artist Michael Kagan (b. 1980) and his first solo show in South Korea. Kagan has been recognized for his helmeted astronaut paintings with angular, expressive brush strokes. In this recent show, as the exhibition title implies, Kagan expands his subject matter and artistic practice through his new series commemorating a legendary F1 champion Nikki Lauda. The title of Kagan’s new series “Nürburgring” refers to the name of the racetrack where Lauda crashed, and the car burst into flames. Six weeks after the terrible accident, Lauda returned to racing with his burns still bandaged. Each artwork in this show is a symbolic snapshot and a fresh moment of Lauda’s practice lap before the race. These dramatic images celebrate courageous figures on the quest for victory. Also, diverting from Kagan’s distinctive brushstroke, this new body of work experiments with photographic images and silk screen over them. Explore the ongoing journey of Kagan and Lauda that pushes the limits of human potential and strength.

가나아트는 영상 제작자이자 큐레이터인 맷 블랙(Matt Black)과의 협업으로 뉴욕 브루클린을 기반으로 활동하는 마이클 케이건(Michael Kagan, b. 1980)의 국내 첫 개인전 《LAUDA》를 개최한다. 특유의 각진 붓 자국을 반복적으로 쌓아 올리며 1세대 우주비행사를 그린 회화작업으로 이름을 알린 작가는 최근 더 나아가 죽음을 각오하고 인간의 한계를 뛰어넘는 도전자들의 상징적 순간에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 특히 이번 개인전은 전시명인 《LAUDA》에서 드러나듯 오스트리아 출신의 전설적인 F1 챔피언 니키 라우다(Niki Lauda, 1949-2019)와 그의 도전에 초점을 맞춘 작업을 소개한다. 본 전시에 출품된 <Nürburgring>(2021) 연작은 1976년 뉘르부르크링에 참여한 라우다가 차량 결함으로 화염에 휩싸인 끔찍한 사고를 암시함과 동시에 사고의 공포와 후유증을 극복한 라우다의 삶을 상징한다. 또한 기존 연작이 지니고 있던 동시대의 영웅적인 인물의 잠재력과 힘이라는 주제의식을 공유하면서도, 사진과 실크스크린 요소를 활용하여 짧고 독특한 붓질을 강조하는 기존의 회화작품과는 차별화를 시도했다. 현실에 안주하는 대신 끊임없이 도전하는 이들의 모습을 그린 이번 개인전이 케이건의 새로운 예술적 실험의 결과물을 감상할 수 있는 뜻깊은 자리가 될 것으로 기대한다.
