Shoji Asami has presented works in the form of painted objects and props on acrylic board or glass, as well as large-scale installations, and has recently been experimenting with oil paintings. Most of the works in this exhibition are new works that she created with the exhibition space at the Gana Art Center in mind. In this exhibition, Asami unveils a series of captivating works on canvas, adorned with vivid hues and bold brushstrokes for the first time in Asia. Additionally, she will present paintings on the windows of the Center's exhibition space with views of Bukhan Mountain along with an installation of large acrylic panels. Asami's creations are marked by a surreal fusion, often portraying figures reminiscent of mythological entities or dreamlike apparitions. These works come to life with beings emitting light from various body parts, faces emerging from unexpected places, androgynous forms, and entwined bodies. Alongside human figures, her canvases feature a menagerie of animals, birds, dogs, skeletons, ghosts, and demons woven together in narratives exploring themes of life and death. The artist conceptualizes her creations as "a map of time and space crafted through the body's response, extending beyond the confines of flesh." Shoji's experience living in Georgia from last year to this year also adds to the expansiveness of her work.

쇼지 아사미는 아크릴판이나 유리 위에 그림을 그린 오브제나 소품 회화에서부터 대형 설치 작업에 이르기까지 다양한 작품을 선보여 왔다. 본 전시의 출품작 대부분은 그녀가 해당 전시와 가나아트센터의 전시공간을 염두에 두고 제작한 신작들이다. 이번 전시에서 쇼지는 북한산이 보이는 센터 전시장의 창문을 액자 삼아 그린 작품과 대형 아크릴판으로 이루어진 설치 작품을 비롯하여 아시아에서 최초로 공개하는 유화 물감을 사용한 캔버스 작품을 선보인다. 풍부한 색채, 거침없고 강렬한 붓 터치가 특징적인 쇼지의 작품에는 신화 또는 꿈을 연상케 하는 인물의 형상이 자주 등장한다. 예를 들어 그녀의 작품에는 신체의 다양한 부위에서 빛을 뿜는 존재, 신체 일부에서 돌연히 튀어나온 얼굴을 가진 존재, 양성구유(両性具有, androgyny)의 존재, 서로의 몸을 휘감고 있는 존재들이 등장한다. 인간의 형상 외에도 그녀의 그림에는 동물, 새, 개, 해골, 요괴, 악마 같은 피사체가 등장하며, 이들을 통해 삶과 죽음과 같은 서사를 표현하기도 한다. 작가는 자신의 작품을 “붓으로 확장한 신체가 육체를 초월한 존재로 거듭날 때, 그 반응에 이끌리듯 생성된 시간과 공간이 담긴 지도”라고 표현한다. 더불어 작년부터 올해까지 조지아에 체류한 경험은 쇼지의 작품에 확장성을 더해준다.
