Yoriko Takabatake (b. 1982) was born in Fukuoka, Japan, and currently lives and works in Tokyo. She received her doctoral degree in oil painting from the University of Tokyo and participated in an artist-in-residence program at the Joseph and Anni Albers Foundation. In the early years of her career, Takabatake considered the canvas a body and added layers of oil paint on it as if she were clothing it, rather than embodying a painterly illusion on the picture plane. The traces of paint, drawn out on the canvas vertically, horizontally and diagonally in thin lines resembling a knitted net, remind one of the textile work by Anni Albers, a member of the Bauhaus. In 2019, Takabatake presented her experimental painting work “VENUS,” which created a powerful surface using elements difficult to control: water and fire. The artist’s dialectic painting principles of “making, breaking and remaking,” and her appropriation of natural materials that achieve accidental effects continues in 2022. In her new work, “MARS,” Takabatake used iron powder and magnets to experiment with the physical changes caused by the forces of nature, thus further expanding the possibilities of painting.

요리코 타카바타케(Yoriko Takabatake, b. 1982)는 일본 후쿠오카에서 출생해 현재 도쿄를 기반으로 활동한다. 도쿄대학교에서 유화 연구로 박사 학위를 취득했고, 조셉&애니알버스재단(Joseph and Anni Albers Foundation)의 예술가 레지던스 프로그램에 선정된 바 있다. 활동 초기 타카바타케는 회화적 환영을 구현하기보다 캔버스를 하나의 신체로 상정하고 그 위에 옷을 입히듯 유화 물감을 겹겹이 더했다. 마치 뜨개질처럼 가로와 세로, 대각선으로 짠 물감의 궤적은 모던 텍스타일의 대가이자 바우하우스의 일원이었던 애니 알버스의 직물 작업을 연상시키기도 한다. 2019년엔 통제가 어려운 물과 불을 이용해 강렬한 표면을 만들어내는 실험적인 회화 작업 를 선보였다. ‘만들고, 부수고, 다시 만든다'는 타카바타케의 변증법적 회화 원리와 우연적인 효과를 자아내는 자연 소재 차용은 2022년에도 이어진다. 신작 에서는 철 가루와 자석을 활용해 자연의 힘이 빚어내는 물리적인 변화를 실험하며 회화의 가능성을 한 번 더 확장했다.
