To the Origin

Gana Art presents To the Origin, an exhibition of four artists who played an integral part in the formation of Korean contemporary art’s own identity, namely: Lee Ufan(b. 1936), Youn Myeungro(b. 1936), Park Sukwon(b. 1942), and Shim Moonseup(b. 1943). This exhibition shows the oeuvres of artists who, in the mid-to-late 20th century, led a turbulent period in Korean contemporary art history through cumulative experiments in various media and forms, featuring their paintings, sculptures, and installation works. The four artists explore the origins of all things, seeking to return to nature by revealing the original materiality and primitiveness of natural objects, or by developing works that reflect on human existence through the means of nature. This exhibition, which observes each artists’ journey toward “the origin,” suggests that their works and the laws of life they believe in, are based on the fundamental principles of nature. Though their efforts to approach the essence of nature differ, it is clear that they share a tendency to move away from artist-centered work, and gradually gravitate toward the meditation of nature. To the Origin offers a chance to discover representative works of each artist and the flow of Korean contemporary art through works spanning from the 1970s to the present. Through this exhibition, Gana Art intends to explore and reflect on the meaning behind their artistic spirit, and how gearing it toward the origin has changed through time to become the contemporary art scene that we are familiar with today.

시원^始原을 향하여

가나아트는 한국 현대미술의 독자적인 정체성 확립을 이끌어 온 4인의 작가, 이우환(b.1936-), 윤명로(b.1936-), 박석원(b.1942-), 심문섭(b.1943-)과 함께 《시원(始原)을 향하여》를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 20세기 중후반 한국 현대미술사의 격동기를 주도한 작가들이 다양한 매체 및 형식 실험을 축적해 완성한 작업 세계를 선보이는 자리로, 회화와 조각, 설치 작업 등을 망라한다. 참여 작가 4인은 표현 재료인 자연물의 고유한 물성과 원초적인 상태를 그대로 드러내는 작업으로 자연회귀적 태도를 보이거나, 자연을 매개로 인간 실존에 대한 고민이 담긴 작업을 전개하는 등 저마다의 방식으로 만물의 근원, 즉 시원을 탐구해왔다는 점에서 맥을 같이 한다. 시원을 향하는 4인의 여정을 관찰하는 이번 전시는 그들의 작품, 나아가 그들이 믿는 삶의 법칙이 자연의 근본 원리에 근거하고 있음을 시사한다. 자연의 본질에 가까이 다가가고자 하는 이들의 노력은 서로 구별되면서도, 모두 작가가 중심이 되는 작업에서 벗어나 점차 자연을 관조하는 태도로 나아간다는 점에서 공유하는 바가 분명하다. 이번 전시는 이우환의 <관계항>, 윤명로의 <겸재예찬>, 박석원의 <적(積)> 그리고 심문섭의 <제시(The Presentation)> 등 각 작가의 대표작을 한 자리에서 관람할 기회일 뿐 아니라 1970년대 작품에서 근작으로 이어지는 당대 한국 현대미술의 흐름을 엿볼 수 있는 자리가 될 것이라 기대된다. 본 전시를 통해 가나아트는 시원을 향한 이들의 작업 정신이 동시대 미술 현장에 이르기까지 어떠한 변천을 거듭했는지 살피며, 그 의미를 고찰할 계기를 마련하고자 한다.
