Green Dreamer

Gana Art Nineone is pleased to present Brooklyn-based artist Aaron Johnson’s first solo exhibition 《Green Dreamer》 in South Korea. Aaron creates an originative set of paintings based on the smudges and mysterious color of absorbed dye by applying watery acrylic paint onto a wet canvas. His creative process is based on the Color-Field Painting method, which is one of the representative techniques of abstract expressionism, and his unique painting is created by applying his aesthetics to the process. He builds layers of paint on canvas by repeating the process, experimenting with the fluidity of the material itself and revealing it in a simple form with a minimum amount of touches. As such, the autonomous and conflicting forms created by the properties of media leads to a hallucinatory atmosphere in his work. Aaron considers imaginary characters in his dreamlike work as living beings in another world and gives each of them a matching name. Through this, visitors can visually experience the mysterious and transcendent world that Aaron unravels. The exhibition exclusively consists of his new series of works created for the occasion, and Gana Art aims to provide a visual experience of the mysterious and transcendent world that the artist unravels where the visitors can spend the end of the year, enjoying his fantasy-like paintings.

브루클린을 기반으로 활동하는 애런 존슨(b.1975-)의 국내 첫 개인전《Green Dreamer》가 가나아트 나인원에서 열린다. 애런은 물기가 가득한 캔버스에 묽은 아크릴 물감을 부어 흡수된 염료의 번짐과 흐릿하고 오묘하게 만들어지는 색상을 바탕으로 한 독창적인 회화를 구현한다. 이는 추상표현주의의 대표적인 회화기법 중 하나인 컬러필드 방식을 활용한 것으로, 여기에 그만의 미학이 결합되어 애런 존슨만의 개성 있는 회화가 만들어진다. 그는 이 과정을 반복하면서 캔버스 위에 겹겹이 물감층을 쌓아, 물질 자체의 유동성을 실험하고 최소한의 터치로 단순한 형태를 드러나게 한다. 이와 같이 매체의 물성이 만들어내는 자율적이고 서로 상반되는 형태는 그의 작품에 환각적인 분위기를 불러일으킨다. 더불어 애런이 작품에 표현한 인물 형태는 세상에 존재하지 않는 인물로, 그는 이들을 다른 세계의 삶을 살아가고 있는 존재라 보고 그에 어울리는 이름과 작품명을 붙인다. 이러한 상상 속의 인물은 그의 작품을 더욱 몽환적으로 환기시킨다. 이를 통해 관람객들은 애런이 풀어낸 신비롭고 초월적인 세계를 시각적으로 접할 수 있다. 특히 이번 전시는 그가 개인전을 위해 제작한 신작으로만 구성되어 있으며 관람자들이 본 전시를 통해 올해 연말을 그의 판타지적인 회화들로 흥미롭게 채우길 기대한다.
