An Zongde
LE TEMPS

Gana Art is pleased to present LE TEMPS, a solo exhibition by An Zongde(b. 1957) whose artistic experiments break down the boundaries of diverse media to capture the traces of change and time. With the effects of natural processes of weathering and oxidation over the years, his work is a trace of how sunlight, wind, and rain deliver universal truths through everyday objects. His latest solo exhibition will revisit the current outcome of his renowned Le temps series which has been ongoing since the 1990s. The show will unveil An’s artistic world full of existential questions and his ‘reality’ that transcends the boundaries of past, present, and future.

Like the ‘Le temps’ in the titles of his artworks, which means “time” in French, An’s artistic language is built through the passage of time and the randomness of waiting. To quote his own notes, “There is no such thing as a fixed image in the continuity of time, and the audience is only witnessing the accumulation of time over many years as an image of that specific moment.” But far from solely implying nihilism that all beings will disappear, Le temps reveals An’s approach that there is a harmony and cycle that forms a new relationship within the continuity of time. Revealing the lapse of natural order and time as it is, this exhibition presents the viewer with a poetic and continuous explorations, interpreting ordinary objects in ways that implies there is no ‘eternal’ value or form to be obsessed with.

LE TEMPS

가나아트는 평면, 입체, 설치의 경계를 넘나들며 자연의 시간을 오브제에 고스란히 담는 작가 안종대(b.1957)의 개인전 《LE TEMPS: 실상》을 개최한다. 안종대는 일상적인 오브제들을 수년에 걸쳐 자연스러운 풍화와 산화과정에 노출시키며 그 변화의 흔적과 시간을 작업으로 엮었다. 2019년 가나아트센터에서의 개인전 이후 4년 만에 열리는 본 전시는 1990년대부터 꾸준히 이어진 <실상(Le temps, 實相)> 연작의 현상(現狀)을 되짚고, 작가가 추구해 나아갈 방향에 대한 지표가 될 것이다. 지난한 기다림과 존재론적 물음 끝에 한층 원숙해진 안종대의 예술세계를 재조명하는 본 개인전이 과거, 현재, 미래의 경계를 초월하여 실존하는 작가의 ‘실상’을 보여줄 것이라 기대한다.

이번에 전시되는 작품들은 모두 <Le Temps>라는 제목을 지니고 있는데, 이는 프랑스어로 ‘시간’을 의미하는 것인 동시에 안종대의 기다림의 미학을 관통하는 개념이다. 안종대는 만물이 시간의 흐름 안에서 고정불변할 수 없으며, 우리는 오랜 세월동안 만들어진 시간의 축적물을 어느 한 순간의 상(像)으로서 목격하는 것뿐이라고 말한 바 있다. 그의 실상 연작은 소멸과 변화의 결과물이자, 어느 곳에도 고여 있지 않고 흐르는 시간의 일면을 보여준다. 작가의 삶의 방향을 함축적으로 상징하는 단어인 ‘실상’은 모든 사물이 단순히 모두 옛것이 되고 없어진다는 허무주의가 아니라, 만물이 조화와 순환을 거듭하며 나아가 시간의 흐름에 순응해 새로운 관계를 형성한다는 의미를 내포한다. 자연스러운 시간의 변화를 있는 그대로 받아들이고 드러내는 안종대의 작품이 ‘영원한’ 가치와 형상에 집착하는 현대를 살아내는 이들에게 깊은 울림으로 다가오길 바란다.
