An Zongde (b. 1957) places paper and fabric at the foot of a mountain or a roof, then records the transformation of the media through the long exposure to the environment. The paper or fabric left outside loses the original color by elements such as sunlight, snow, and rain; becoming faded and murky, it creates a pattern unique to its passage of time. In this way, the artist turns such transformation by the greater force of nature into works of art. With the philosophy of “always finding materials by chance,” the artist seeks art in nature and daily life. The most quotidian items such as aluminum foil, clothespins, and nails are the principal elements in recording the time’s change. The foil faces the light and tears, while the nail rusts and leaves a mark on the fabric. As if the physical matter disappeared and only the memory’s afterimage remains, the traces of pebble, tree branch, and rusted nail show up on the faded fabric. When the “present” time passes, one may only remain in memory, or even be forgotten. Through beautiful passage of nature and intervention of everyday objects, the artist intends to capture the coexistence in nature and civilization.

안종대(b.1957)는 종이와 천을 산기슭이나 지붕 위에 내놓은 후, 이를 장시간 외부 환경에 노출시켜 매체의 변화를 그대로 기록한다. 밖에 오랜 기간 방치된 천과 종이는 햇빛, 눈, 비 등과 같은 외부적인 요소들에 의해 본연의 색을 잃고, 바래거나 탁해지며 시간의 흐름에 따른 독특한 무늬를 만들어낸다. 작가는 이와 같이 불가항력적인 자연의 힘에 의한 자연스러운 변모를 예술로 만든다. 작가에게 ‘재료는 항상 우연히 발견하는 것’으로, 그는 자연과 일상 속에서 예술을 찾는다. 호일, 빨래집게, 못과 같은 가장 일상적인 물건들은 안종대의 작업에서 시간의 변화를 기록하는 주요한 요소로서 자리한다. 호일은 빛에 바라고 뜯겨지며, 못은 녹슬어 천 위에 자국을 남긴다. 마치 실체는 사라지고 기억의 잔상만 남 듯, 돌, 나뭇가지, 녹슨 못의 흔적이 빛 바랜 천 위에 자리하는 것이다. 지금’, ‘현재’, 내가 머무르는 이 시간은 지나가고 나면 기억으로만 존재할 수도, 혹은 잊힐 수도 있다. 작가는 이러한 자연적인 흐름의 아름다움, 그리고 개입된 일상의 물건들을 통해 문명과 자연 안에서 공존을 우리들의 이야기를 작업에 담아내고자 하는 것이다.
