Edmund de Waal
their bright traces

Gana Art is pleased to present their bright traces, a solo exhibition of works by Edmund de Waal (b. 1964). Widely known for his installations of handmade porcelain vessels grouped in minimalist structures, de Waal has opened up a new chapter in the field of contemporary art. With his poetic arrangements of objects, the artist investigates themes of materiality, human history, memory, and diaspora. De Waal’s works have been highly acclaimed across the world and exhibited at numerous internationally renowned museums, including Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna; British Museum, London; and the Frick Collection, New York. their bright traces which will be presented at Gana Art Center and Gana Art Nineone from March 9 to April 3, 2022 is de Waal’s first solo exhibition in Korea. Featuring a wide range of works created between 2013 and 2021, Gana Art wishes to provide an opportunity to appreciate the artistic world of this contemporary master.

가나아트는 작은 도자에서부터 거대한 설치 미술에 이르기까지 도자의 다양한 한계를 실험하고 있는 영국 작가, 에드문드 드 발(Edmund de Waal, b. 1964)의 개인전, 《their bright traces》를 개최한다. 에드문드 드 발은 수공으로 만든 불규칙한 형태의 도자들을 시적(詩的)으로 배열한 설치 작품으로, 디아스포라(Diaspora), 재료의 물질성, 사물에 담긴 인류의 역사와 기억 등의 주제를 시각화한다. 도예를 넘어 장소특정성을 고려한 설치 작품으로 현대미술의 새로운 장르를 연 그의 작품은 로스앤젤레스카운티미술관, 빅토리아앤알버트박물관, 빈미술사박물관, 영국박물관, 그리고 프릭컬렉션 등 세계 유수의 미술관에 전시, 소장되고 있다. 2022년 3월 9일부터 4월 3일까지 가나아트센터와 가나아트 나인원에서 열리는 본 전시는 에드문드 드 발의 한국 첫 개인전으로, 가나아트는 2013년부터 2021년까지의 그의 작업을 망라함으로써 동시대 미술사의 중요한 한 축을 차지하고 있는 현대미술가의 작품을 실견할 수 있는 자리를 마련하고자 한다.
