Pressing Shadows

Gana Art is delighted to introduce Pressing Shadows,a solo exhibition by Elizabeth Schwaiger. After an MFA from the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland, Schwaiger, the Brooklyn-based artist has been showcased in both solo and group exhibitions at various institutions, including Nicola Vassell Gallery (New York), Jane Lombard Gallery (New York), The National Portrait Gallery (London) and a residency at the Rauschenberg Foundation. In collaboration with Gana Art and curator Matt Black, this marks Schwaiger’s inaugural solo exhibition in Asia, presenting recent paintings depicting depeopled spaces, full of the remnants of countless cultures.

Elizabeth Schwaiger’s research pursuits center on socio-ecology, the concept of the uncanny, and the examination of power differentials, thereby prompting her exploration of pertinent contemporary concerns such as rising sea levels and global warming. The artist visualise the challenges we face today by recreating her interpretations of indoor spaces that provide refuge from the external world. The exhibition, titled Pressing Shadows, takes its name from the artist’s featuring work in this exhibition and reflects the dynamic on which this ongoing body of work operates. As visually seen within her paintings, Pressing Shadows can be construed as a metaphor for the encroaching obscurity that gradually envelops the world she has constructed on a two-dimensional surface, as well as an allusion to the bleakness of many cultures on the verge of collapse. The artist herself likens the process to the creation of a herbarium, saying that his work can be read as a parallel to the process of drying and pressing botanical specimens before taxidermy and cataloguing them. Within the works showcased in this exhibition, which resemble the display of a museum that institutionally collects and displays traces of historical cultures rather than plants, we see the traces of a civilisation’s flagellum, which the artist has meticulously collected, pressed into the canvas.

가나아트는 엘리자베스 슈바이거(Elizabeth Schwaiger, b.1985-)의 개인전, 《Pressing Shadows》를 개최한다. 미국의 노스 텍사스 대학에서 학사, 스코틀랜드의 글래스고 미술대학에서 석사를 취득한 뒤, 브루클린을 기반으로 활동하는 슈바이거는 Nicola Vassell Gallery(뉴욕), Jane Lombard Gallery(뉴욕), The National Portrait Gallery(런던), Co-Lab Projects(오스틴) 등 다수의 기관에서 개최된 개인전 및 단체전을 통해 소개된 바 있다. 가나아트와 큐레이터 맷 블랙(Matt Black)과의 협업으로 마련된 본 전시는 아시아에서 최초로 선보이는 슈바이거의 개인전으로, 인류가 부재하는 기묘한 분위기의 실내 공간을 그려낸 15점의 근작 회화를 조명하는 자리가 될 것이다.

엘리자베스 슈바이거는 사회생태학, 기묘한 것들(the uncanny), 권력의 격차 등에 주된 관심사를 둔 리서치를 기반으로 해수면 상승, 지구 온난화 등 현대사회가 직면한 주요 문제에 대한 탐구를 지속해왔다. 이를 기반으로 작가는 마치 재난이 발생한 이후의 실내 공간을 연상시키는 독특한 회화를 그려왔다. 외부세계로부터 피난처의 역할을 하는 내부 공간을 자신만의 방식으로 재현함으로써 현시대가 마주한 위협을 시각화한 것이다. 이번 전시의 제목인 《Pressing Shadows》는 동명의 출품작의 제목에서 따온 것인 동시에 그의 작업이 작동하는 역학관계를 그대로 보여주는 표현이다. 그의 회화에서 시각적으로 확인할 수 있듯, “Pressing Shadows”는 작가가 평면에 구축해낸 세계에 서서히 다가오는 어둠을 의미하는 것이자 수많은 문화들이 붕괴하기 직전의 암울함을 암시하는 것으로도 해석 가능하다. 또한, 작가 자신은 이를 식물표본집의 제작 과정에 비유했는데, 마치 식물 표본을 건조하고 압착하여 이를 박제하고 목록화하는 과정과 자신의 작업 과정이 비슷하게 읽힐 수 있다고 말했다. 식물이 아닌 역사적 문화의 자취들을 제도적으로 수집하여 진열해 둔 박물관의 전시 전경과도 같은 본 전시의 출품작에서 우리는 작가가 세밀하게 채취한 어느 문명의 편린이 화면에 압착되어 남긴듯한 흔적을 목도하게 된다.
