Hiroyuki Hamada

Gana Art is pleased to announce the opening of Japanese-born sculptor Hiroyuki Hamada’s solo exhibition. Currently based in East Hampton, New York, the artist creates abstract forms and imagery mainly with the mediums of sculpture and painting. Hamada’s work has been recently shown at the Bookstein Projects, Pamela Salisbury Gallery, and Guild Hall in New York. At this first exhibition of Hamada’s work in Korea, Gana Art wishes to introduce the artist’s diverse oeuvre featuring paintings and sculptures created between 2001 and 2021. Starting his career as a painter, Hamada began incorporating non-traditional painting materials such as enamel, resin, and wax in his work and naturally became committed to both painting and sculpture. This use of industrial materials along with seemingly machine-made curvy lines and intricate repetitive patterns are evocative of mechanical civilization and the scientific development of the modern age. However, the worn-out effects that the artist adds to the surface as well as purely abstract forms without specific stories or symbols create an ambivalent, uncanny atmosphere where the unknown times of the past and present are overlapped. Reminiscent of a part of a spacecraft or a human body as well as daily objects or animals, Hamada’s work brings to mind different mental imageries, blurring the boundary between the familiar and the unfamiliar. Through this exhibition that offers an unprecedented opportunity to explore the artistic world of Hamada in Korea, Gana Art hopes to enable the viewer to have a pure aesthetic experience and synesthetic response that the artist’s work triggers.

히로유키 하마다

가나아트는 회화와 조각을 주요 매체로 사용하여 추상적이고 구조적인 형태의 작품을 선보이는 히로유키 하마다(b. 1968)의 개인전을 개최한다. 뉴욕 이스트 햄프턴을 기반으로 활동하는 그는 최근 뉴욕의 북스타인 프로젝트, 파멜라 솔즈베리 갤러리, 길드 홀 미술관 등에서 전시한 바 있다. 이번 전시는 하마다의 국내 첫 개인전으로, 2001년부터 2021년까지 제작된 작품들을 소개함으로써 그의 예술 세계를 폭넓게 조명하고자 한다. 회화 작가로 예술가의 길을 걷기 시작한 그는 전통적인 재료를 넘어 에나멜, 레진, 왁스 등으로 입체적인 질감을 만들어내는 기법을 탐구하며 회화와 조각의 경계에서 작품을 선보여 왔다. 이러한 공업적 재료의 사용과 기계로 재단한 듯 매끈한 곡선, 동적 운동을 연상케 하는 반복적인 패턴은 현대의 기계문명과 과학의 발전을 상기시킨다. 그러나 작가는 표면에 의도적으로 바랜 듯한 효과를 더하고 구체적인 이야기나 상징, 레퍼런스가 철저히 배제된 추상적 형태를 통해 아직 다가오지 않은 미지의 시간과 과거가 교차된 듯 모호하고 생경한 분위기를 연출한다. 감상자에 따라 우주선이나 신체의 일부, 또는 일상의 사물이나 동물을 연상시키는 작품은 낯선 감각을 일깨우며 다양한 심상을 불러일으킨다. 이번 전시가 국내에서 처음으로 소개되는 하마다의 작품을 감상할 수 있는 뜻깊은 기회를 제공하고, 온전한 추상의 영역에서 다양한 내적 경험과 사유를 촉발하기를 기대한다.
