Hur Shan
A nest for all the birds in the world

Gana Art is pleased to presentShan Hur solo exhibition, this time at Gana Art Bogwang five years after his solo exhibition in 2018. In the past, he created familiar yet somehow unfamiliar situations through direct interventions in architectural spaces. His recent works, however, directly address climate crisis as he has grown alarmed by environmental crises such as climate change. He has become aware that the environmental threat escalating with the acceleration of climate change is more than simply a matter of preserving the natural environment, but is interwoven with the power struggles between nations and economic issues. Through this exhibition entitled A Nest for All the Birds in the World, Hur aims to point out climate crisis as a topic that is progressing all around us.  

A Nest for All the Birds in the World (2023) encapsulates all of these facets of the artist’s vision. He represents his contemporaries as birds and the planet we live on as a nest, emphasizing the need for action to solve the problems we face today. He points up that global warming is not just a problem for Korea, but something the world needs to address. This work is particularly noteworthy because it integrates the story he wishes to tell through the exhibition and leant it its title. In the past, Hur’s works of architectural and sculptural convergence aimed to transform existing spaces and change the perception of the actual environment. In contrast, in this exhibition he presents works that encourage reflection on the current society, offering stories about a new environment and leading the viewers to contemplate issues. Through the exhibition, Hur aims to lead visitors to experience climate crisis by visually materializing it through sculpture. By doing so, he hopes to find an answer for an era in which we cannot foresee how events will unfold and call for a change in our perceptions. It is hoped that the exhibition will offer visitors a chance to directly perceive issues of environmental pollution and experience life in the new era that the artist dreams of for the future.

모든 새들의 둥지

가나아트는 2018년 이후 5년만에 허산 작가의 개인전을 가나아트 보광에서 개최한다. 그동안 건축 공간에 직접적으로 개입하는 작업을 통해 익숙하면서도 낯선 상황을 연출하였던 그는 최근에는 기후위기에 경각심을 느끼면서 환경 문제를 직접적으로 다루는 작업을 새롭게 전개하고 있다. 작가는 가속화되고 있는 지구 온난화로 인해 대두되는 기후위기는 환경을 아끼는 단순한 문제를 뛰어 넘어 국가 간의 힘겨루기과 경제적인 요인까지 포괄적으로 연결된다는 것을 깨달았다. 이에 허산은 본 전시 《세상의 모든 새들을 위한 둥지》를 통해 기후위기를 직접적으로 표출함으로써 이를 담론의 주제로 던진다.

<세상의 모든 새들을 위한 둥지(A nest for all the birds in the world)>(2023)는 이러한 작가의 작업관을 모두 담아내고 있는 작품이다. 작가는 동시대인들을 새, 우리가 살아가는 지구를 둥지로 표현하여 현 시대에 직면한 문제를 해결하기 위해 우리가 행동해야 함을 강조하고 기후위기가 단순히 우리만의 문제가 아니라, 전 세계에서 주목해야 할 문제임을 역설했다. 특히 이 작품은 이번 전시에 그가 하고자 하는 이야기를 통합적으로 담아낸 것으로, 전시명과 동일하다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 이처럼 본 전시에서 허산은 기후위기에 대한 이야기를 조각을 통해 시각적으로 구체화함으로써 보는 이가 실질적으로 위기를 체감하길 바랐다. 이로써 작가는 앞으로 전개될 ‘새로운 시대’에 대한 해답을 찾고, 인식의 변화를 촉구하고자 했다. 따라서 이번 전시는 작가의 메시지를 통해 오늘날의 기후위기를 직면해 볼 수 있는 기회로, 더욱 나은 새 시대를 위한 우리의 태도를 돌아볼 수 있는 좋은 자리가 될 것으로 기대한다.
