Paradise

Gana Art is pleased to present Paradise, a solo exhibition of Kim Sun Woo (b. 1988-), who discusses the dreams and freedoms of modern people through “Dodo.” The exhibition will feature new works that depict Dodo in landscapes, such as the coastline with the clouds flowing diagonally and the jungle with evening sunset.

Since 2014, Kim has been asking questions about the nature of modern society with his bird image. The Dodo was originally able to fly, but no longer felt the need to fly on the blessed island of Mauritius, and gave up flying on its own, eventually facing the tragedy of extinction. Kim considered this story of the Dodo to be similar to the reality that people face in daily life. He thought that people these days were pulling their own feathers of freedom while they were settling in a reality that they mistakenly think of as paradise.

Kim tries to express hope instead of revealing this tragedy through the Dodo. The paradise presented by Kim in this exhibition means the pinnacle of life that is constantly drifting and dynamically changing like the sea of infinite possibilities. The Dodo, which Kim has portrayed as a being with the potentiality of flying again on the canvas, meets his paradise and plays more freely. Kim hopes that the paradise he draws will become a powerful space that leads people to unexpected new paths and experiences in a sedentary society. Through this exhibition, Gana Art hopes that viewers will find their own paradise and strengthen their minds to fly again.

가나아트는 ‘도도새’를 매개로 현대인의 꿈과 자유에 대해 사유하는 김선우(b. 1988-)의 《Paradise》를 1월 27일부터 2월 27일까지 평창동 가나아트센터에서 개최한다. 이번 전시에는 사선으로 흐르는 구름을 배경으로 한 해경과 저녁 노을로 물든 정글 등 새로운 풍경 속 도도새를 그린 김선우의 신작 21여 점이 출품된다.

김선우는 2014년부터 ‘새(鳥)상’이라는 말로 세상(世上)의 본질에 대해 질문을 던지는 작업을 이어오고 있다. 김선우가 주목한 도도새는 본래 날 수 있는 새였으나, 천혜의 모리셔스 섬에서 더 이상 날아야 할 필요성을 느끼지 못했고 스스로 날기를 포기해 결국 멸종이라는 비극을 맞았다. 김선우는 이러한 도도새의 이야기가 현대인이 일상에서 부딪히고 있는 현실과 닮았다고 여겼다. 그가 보기에 현대인들은 낙원이라고 착각하고 있는 현실 속에서 안주하는 동안 스스로 자유의 깃털을 하나씩 뽑고 있었다.

김선우는 도도새를 통해 이러한 비극을 드러내는 대신 희망을 노래한다. 김선우가 이번 전시, 《Paradise》에서 선보이는 낙원은 무한한 가능성을 지닌 바다와 같이 끊임없이 표류하며 역동적으로 변화하는 삶의 정점을 의미한다. 김선우가 그간 화폭에서 다시 비상할 수 있는 가능성을 품은 존재로 그려온 도도새는 이 낙원을 만나 더욱 자유롭게 노닌다. 김선우는 자신이 그리는 낙원이 정주(定住) 사회 속 현대인들을 예상치 못했던 새로운 길과 경험으로 이끄는 힘 있는 공간이 되기를 희망한다. 가나아트는 이번 전시를 통해 관람자들이 자신만의 낙원을 찾아, 다시 날아오를 수 있는 마음의 근육을 키울 수 있기를 기대한다.
