Kwun Suncheol

Kwun Suncheol(b.1944-) has put his intuitive and intense handwriting on canvas based on the face of Korean mountains, rivers, and people, concerning the background of modern and contemporary Korean history. Kwun’s work is read as if it believes in hylozoism, indicating that all matter—including both living and inanimate things—has her own vitality and idea. This view takes a reasonable point by means of scrutinizing the faces of featured artworks. As the presented materials such as an individual face, mountains, magnolias, and cotton gloves hold the unique value of each being on an equal footing, the artist treats them without any partiality. Every target has its own face and head: the image of Jesus, the face of independence fighters—Yoon Bonggil, Yoo Gwansun, and Ahn Junggeun—Jeon Bongjun, who led the Donghak Peasant Revolution, the former comfort woman’s face and hands, the vast mountains such as Baekdu and Halla, and a small flower. The first exhibition hall consists of a series of <Soul> and <The Terracotta>; the second hall is composed of <Comfort Woman> and <Magnolia> series; the third hall presents group works of large-scale landscapes: <Baekdu>, <Halla>, and <Face>. Trace is the solo exhibition presented in four years after the solo exhibition at the Daegu Museum of Art in 2016. The exhibition will provide a place where the audience has time to reflect the artist’s original perspective on the texture of objects, historical events, and characters.

권순철
흔적

권순철(b.1944-)은 한국근현대사의 이면에 관심을 두고 한국의 산과 강, 한국인의 얼굴을 소재로 직관적이면서도 강렬한 필체를 캔버스에 담아 왔다. 권순철의 작품은 모든 사물(생물과 무생물 모두 포괄)에 생명이 깃들어 있다고 믿는 물활론적(Hylozoism) 사고가 깃들어 있는 것처럼 읽힌다. 이번 전시의 출품작 면면들을 들여다보면 더욱 그러하다. 인간의 얼굴, 산, 목련송이, 면장갑과 같은 소재는 모두 대등한 차원에서 저마다 존재로서의 가치를 지니고 있는 것처럼 작가는 그것들을 공평하게 다루고 있다. 모든 대상은 각자의 얼굴과 머리를 지니고 있는 것이다. 예수의 형상, 윤봉길, 유관순, 안중근과 같은 독립투사의 얼굴, 동학농민운동의 의병들과 그들을 이끈 전봉준, 위안부 할머니의 얼굴과 손, 그리고 백두, 한라와 같은 거대한 산의 얼굴과 작은 꽃 한송이가 그러하다. 제1전시장에서는 <넋>, <테라코타> 연작이, 제2전시장에서는 <위안부>, <목련> 연작이, 제3전시장에서는 대형 풍경화 <백두>, <한라>, <얼굴> 연작 등의 작품들이 소개된다. 본 전시는 2016년 대구미술관 개인전 이후 4년만에 열리는 개인전이다. 이번 권순철 전시를 통해 대상 자체가 가진 질감 혹은 역사적 사건이나 인물에 대한 작가 고유의 해석을 한눈에 되짚어 볼 수 있는 자리가 될 것이라 기대한다.
