Gana Art is pleased to present Iridescent, a solo exhibition of Maria Chang(b.1981-) characterized by works with thick matière and dynamic colors from June 9 to June 26. This exhibition features a series of new paintings, “Permeation” by Chang, one of the most notable artists in the current art scene, and this is her second collaboration with Gana Art after her solo exhibition at Gana Art Sounds in 2020.

Chang has continued to cast doubt on the boundaries of standardized genres or forms through her works. Chang completed a uniquely textured canvas using plastering tools, gel stone, and linen instead of general painting tools studying various materials and media. And a sense of volume of Chang’s canvas represents Chang’s unique world of works, which is not easily incorporated into the realms of painting or sculpture. Recently, the artist completed the Permeation series, inspired by the harmony of the seven colors of the rainbow without clear boundaries. In this series, Chang tries to differentiate it from her previous works by coloring the canvas as if it were dyed. In the previous work, the vivid color of a monochromatic tone combined with the artist’s powerful touch to deliver lively energy, but in the Permeation series, the pigments of various colors permeate or harmonize with each other, creating a mysterious atmosphere. Gana Art deeply examines Chang’s art from various perspectives through this exhibition featuring her representative works, In Between-Spring Series and newly introduced Permeation series.

가나아트는 두텁게 쌓아 올린 마티에르(matière)와 생동하는 색상의 사용이 특징적인 장마리아(b.1981-)의 개인전 《Iridescent》를 6월 9일부터 6월 26일까지 평창동 가나아트센터에서 개최한다. 이번 개인전은 현재 미술 현장에서 가장 주목받고 있는 작가로 손꼽히는 장마리아의 신작 <Permeation>을 공개하는 자리로, 2020년 가나아트 사운즈에서의 개인전 이후 가나아트와는 두 번째 협업이다.

장마리아는 줄곧 정해진 장르나 형식의 경계에 대해 물음을 던지는 작업을 이어온 작가이다. 그는 다양한 재료와 매체에 대한 고민 끝에 일반적인 화구 대신 공구와 회반죽, 마사천을 이용한 독특한 텍스처의 화면을 완성했고, 이처럼 양감이 두드러지는 화면은 회화와 조각의 영역 어디에도 쉽게 편입되지 않는 장마리아의 독자적인 작업 세계를 대표한다. 최근 작가는 무지개의 일곱 빛깔이 뚜렷한 경계 없이 조화를 이루는 것에서 영감을 받아 <Permeation> 연작을 구상했다. 이 시리즈에서 그는 화면을 물감으로 물들이듯 채색해 전작과의 차별을 꾀하는데, 전작에서는 단색조의 경쾌한 색감이 작가의 힘 있는 터치와 결합해 활기찬 에너지를 전달했다면, <Permeation> 시리즈에서는 각기 다른 색의 안료가 서로 스며들거나 어우러지며 신비로운 분위기를 자아낸다. 가나아트는 그의 대표작인 <In Between-Spring Series>를 비롯해 전작의 맥을 이은 신작인 <Permeation> 연작을 선보이는 본 전시를 통해 그의 독창적인 작업 세계를 다각도로 조명하고자 한다.
