Maria Chang

Gana Art Sounds is pleased to announce its first exhibition with the artist Maria Chang, opening on Wednesday, September 9th. The exhibition features a series of new paintings, “Spring Series” and “In Between-Spring Series,” characterized by a thick matière. “In Between-Spring Series” combines the features of her previous works “Spring Series” and “In Between.” In the series, “In Between” that began in 2019, the artist created paintings that were close to relief by using materials that could bring out the volume of the painting, such as plaster and sand. The gridded plane builds a three-dimensional space where positive and negative space coexists. Such sculptural features in the paintings are also revealed in her work style of handling plaster as if carving using tools such as wide-sided knives commonly used for cement-applying, iron brushes, and a rubber spatula. In “Spring Series,” which began at the same time, she began to reveal the colors that had been hidden under the plaster. In the new paintings combined with these features, the traces left by the artist get out of the geometric grid, form the plane rhythmically and make a feast of colors on the surface. This exhibition will provide a glimpse into the spectrum of Maria Chang’s works, who is constantly challenging to find her own language.

가나아트 사운즈는 두텁게 쌓아올린 마티에르(matière)의 물성이 두드러지는 장마리아(Maria Chang, 1981)의 신작 회화, ‘Spring Series’와 ‘In Between-Spring Series’ 연작을 선보이는 개인전을 개최한다. 그의 신작, ‘In Between-Spring Series’에는 이전작인 ‘Spring Series’와 ‘In Between’ 연작의 특징이 조합되어 있다. 작가는 2019년부터 시작한 ‘In Between’ 연작에서 회반죽, 모래, 젤스톤 등 화면의 양감을 살릴 수 있는 재료를 써 부조에 가까운 회화를 만들었다. 격자로 구획된 평면은 캔버스 위에 포지티브(positive)와 네거티브(negative) 공간이 공존하는 하나의 입체 공간을 구축한다. 이와 같은 그의 회화에서의 조각적 특징은 시멘트를 바르는 넓은 면의 나이프, 철로 된 붓, 고무 주걱 등의 공구를 사용하여 조각하듯 회반죽을 다루는 작업 방식에서도 드러난다. 같은 시기에 시작한 ‘Spring Series’ 연작에서는 회반죽 아래 가리어져 있던 색채들을 표면으로 자신 있게 드러내기 시작했다. 무채색의 회칠 아래에 잠들었던 초록, 하늘, 노랑 등 갖가지 색이 피어난 이 작품에 장마리아는 ‘봄’이란 이름을 붙였다. 이러한 특징이 결합된 신작에는 작가가 남긴 화면 위의 흔적이 기하학적인 그리드에서 벗어나 사방으로 자유롭게 뻗어나가며, 화면을 리듬감 있게 구성한다. 그리고 이와 더불어 회반죽의 표면으로 올라온 색채의 향연이 시선을 끈다. 이와 같은 신작이 공개되는 이번 개인전은 본인만의 조형언어를 찾고자 끊임없이 변주해가는 장마리아의 작업 세계를 엿볼 수 있는 기회가 될 것이라 기대한다.
