Mary Obering

Gana Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of paintings by Mary Obering, her first with the gallery and first in South Korea. This exhibition features a survey of Obering’s work from 1974 through 1994. The paintings highlight the transition in her practice over decades while continuing to explore the essence of color. Her shift from creating layered paintings on canvas to working with egg tempera on panel expresses her urge to explore new materials and techniques while remaining committed to abstraction. This exhibition is presented in collaboration with Kayne Griffin, Los Angeles.

In 1971, at the encouragement of Carl Andre, whom she met in Italy, Obering moved to New York where she created paintings by assembling cut canvas panels forming geometric abstract arrangements. It was also her newfound community of artist friends, such as Donald Judd, that encouraged this modular approach to abstraction. In Firefall(1975) Obering layers sheets of unstretched canvas on top of one another in various geometric motifs. The layers of colors – earth tones offset by jeweled red hues – rise from the two-dimensional plane into the space of the viewer. In the late 1970s, inspired by her travels to Italy, Obering adopted the practice of painting egg tempera on panel with gold leaf, a technique used by the Italian Masters. Few artists were using these materials in contemporary practice, and they became one of the hallmarks of Obering’s work. Untitled III, from 1986, demonstrates the materiality of the painting. White gesso and brick-colored gilding clay (two base materials that are typically not visible) are exposed and appear as prominently as the tempera and gold leaf in the composition. Though she utilizes various media over time, Obering does so in the same abstract language across her works while highlighting her mastery of color.

가나아트 한남은 독창적인 기하 추상회화 작업을 지속해 온 메리 오버링(Mary Obering, b. 1937)의 한국에서의 첫 개인전을 로스앤젤레스에 위치한 그의 전속 화랑인 케인 그리핀(Kayne Griffin) 갤러리와의 협업을 통해 개최한다. 메리 오버링은 칼 안드레(Carl Andre, b. 1935), 도널드 저드(Donald Judd, 1928-1994) 등의 저명한 미니멀리즘 작가들과 1970년대 뉴욕 화단을 배경으로 활동한 작가이다. 그는 포스트모더니즘 담론의 영향으로 멀티미디어, 퍼포먼스 작업이 성행하던 당대 뉴욕 미술계의 분위기 속에서 회화의 원류를 되짚는 자신만의 길을 개척해나갔다. 본 전시는 작가가 활발히 활동했던 시기인 1974년에서부터 1994년 사이에 그려진 회화를 조망하는 자리다. ‘사각형’이라는 형태요소와 ‘반복’을 통한 화면의 구상이 특징적인 그의 회화는 대량복제 시대의 상품 생산방식을 작품을 통해 언급했던 미니멀리즘의 계보를 잇는 것이다. 더 나아가 오버링은 1970년대 말, 르네상스 시대의 이탈리아 거장들이 사용했던 재료인 에그 템페라와 금박을 회화에 도입하며 각각의 소재가 지닌 고유의 색상과 물성에 집중했다. 이번 개인전은 이러한 성과를 인정받아 뉴욕 현대 미술관, 메트로폴리탄 미술관, 휘트니 미술관 등 세계 유수의 미술관에 소장되어 있는 메리 오버링의 작품 중에서도 수십 년간의 화업이 남긴 정수를 실견할 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다.
