Overlaying Time

Gana Art is delighted to announce the presentation of Overlaying Time, the solo exhibition by Huh Myoungwook (b. 1966). Huh continues to create original works that represent the traces of time through painting. His work crosses the boundaries of fine art and practical art, including painting, sculpture, video, and crafts, with a contemporary interpretation of traditional lacquer. In addition to showcasing his paintings and sculptures, the exhibition will also feature a selection of his recent video works that capture the essence of time in nature. This will provide an opportunity not only to audience the entirety of his works but also to immerse oneself in his artistic trajectory as it expands into a broader realm.

Huh believes that color is what represents himself and his life. The artist conducted extensive color experimentation using various media to embody the specific colors he desired. After numerous efforts, he successfully expressed these sensuous colors through the lacquer medium. Lacquer is temporal, requiring dozens of overlaying and a long drying process to achieve the perfect color. Every morning, He makes colors and overlays after then incorporating the waiting time for them to dry within his works. His works are an overlaying time and as is often the case with the results of years of practice, it is imbued with a sense of the sublime. Through his hands, the time that has already passed becomes a sculpture, leaving traces, and even that, as time flows, naturally abrades, transforms, and eventually disappears. As the artist claims that time for contemplating natural phenomena such as birth, existence, and disappearance is essential in our lives, we hope you will have a moment to reflect on the meaning of our finite lives in front of his works that capture the passage of time.

Overlaying Time

가나아트는 시간의 흔적을 고스란히 평면에 옮겨내는 독창적인 작업을 이어가는 허명욱의 개인전 《Overlaying Time》을 개최한다. 그는 전통적인 옻칠을 현대적으로 해석하여 회화, 조각, 영상, 공예품 등 순수예술과 실용미술의 경계를 넘나들며 다양한 장르의 작업을 선보이는 작가이다. 이번 전시에서는 허명욱의 회화나 조각 외에도 그가 최근 몰두하고 있는 자연의 시간을 담은 작업의 일부를 영상으로 공개한다. 이로써 그의 작업을 총망라하여 보여줄 뿐 아니라 더 넓은 영역으로 확장되어 가는 그의 예술적 궤도를 함께 경험할 수 있는 기회가 될 것으로 기대한다.

허명욱은 색이 그의 삶과 작가 자신을 대변할 수 있다고 생각하였고, 추구하는 색을 완벽히 구현하기 위한 끊임없는 탐구 끝에 이를 표현해낼 수 있는 매체로 옻을 선택하였다. 옻은 오롯이 색을 내는 데까지 수십 번의 칠과 장시간의 건조 과정을 거치며 시간성을 지니게 된다. 작가는 매일 새로운 색을 배합하고 칠하며, 그것이 건조되기를 기다리는 시간들을 작품 안에 녹여낸다. 하나의 작품을 완성하기까지 수행자의 고행을 방불케할 정도로 반복적인 칠 작업과 긴 시간을 요구하는 허명욱의 작업은 시간의 축적물이며, 오랜 수행의 결과물이 대개 그러하듯 숭고함마저 담아내게 된다. 이미 지나간 시간은 그의 손을 거침으로써 형태를 지닌 조형체가 되어 흔적을 남기고, 그마저도 시간의 흐름에 따라 자연스럽게 마모되고 변모하여 결국 소멸한다. 탄생과 존재, 소멸과 같은 자연스러운 현상에 대한 사유의 시간이 우리의 삶 속에서 꼭 필요하다는 작가의 말처럼, 시간의 흐름을 고스란히 담아낸 그의 작품 앞에서 삶의 유한함을, 그리고 그 의미를 되돌아보는 시간을 가질 수 있기를 바란다.
