Sublime Beauty of Sosan

Gana Art is pleased to present Sublime Beauty of Sosan by Park Daesung(b.1945-, pen-name: Sosan), a pioneer of modernizing traditional ink painting. This exhibition is to commemorate the past two years of the journey of Park who toured eight global institutions, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and the Hood Museum at Dartmouth College to show his aesthetic world overseas and expand the potential of Korean ink painting, finding new horizon of Hangukhwa(Korean Painting). The exhibition including works featured at touring exhibitions and recently completed shows the most mature form of the themes and medium that Park explored throughout his career and spotlights his originality that got traction in the global art scene.

” It didn’t happen overnight. The audience felt that sincerity because I searched for ‘invisible roots’ all my life,” Park said about this tour. His stroke, cultivated for more than half a century, is the root that supports his paintings and a source of strength that expands them into infinite possibilities. The exhibition focuses on Park’s large-scale landscape, which was particularly praised during the tour. The landscape of Mother Nature, with his mature brush strokes, is the essence of his unique aesthetics. Sosan’s landscapes, which have finally reached the state of sublime beauty through endless practice, are full of the vitality and vigor that derive changes.

박대성
소산비경(小山祕境)

가나아트는 전통 수묵을 현대적으로 변용하여 동시대 한국화의 세계화를 이끈 소산 박대성(小山 朴大成, b.1945-)의 해외 순회 기념전, 《소산비경(小山祕境): Sublime Beauty of Sosan》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 지난 2년간 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관(LACMA), 다트머스대학교 후드미술관(Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College) 등 총 여덟 곳의 해외 기관에서 한국 수묵화의 확장 가능성을 보여준 소산의 행보를 돌아보며, 순회전을 계기로 확인된 박대성과 한국화의 새 지평을 조망하고자 한다. 순회전 출품작과 최근 완성된 신작으로 구성되는 본 전시는 박대성이 화업 전반에 걸쳐 천착한 주제와 소재의 가장 완숙한 형태를 선보이며 그의 예술 세계에 대한 이해를 돕고, 해외 화단에서 주목한 소산수묵의 독창성을 발견할 자리가 될 것으로 기대된다.

 박대성은 이번 순회전에 대해 “하루아침에 된 것이 아니다. 일평생 ‘보이지 않는 뿌리’를 찾았기 때문에 관객들이 그 진정성을 느낀 것이다”라며 소회를 밝혔다. 반세기가 넘는 시간 동안 무수한 붓질로 길러온 그의 필력은 그림을 지탱하는 뿌리이자 무한한 가능성으로 뻗어 나갈 힘의 원천이다. 이번 전시는 해외 미술 현장에서 특히 찬사를 받은 박대성의 대형 산수화를 조명한다. 무르익은 필치로 그린 대자연의 풍경은 그의 독보적 미학의 정수다. 끝없는 수행으로 마침내 비경(祕境)의 경지에 오른 소산의 산수에서 생동하는 기운은 물론 변화를 두려워하지 않는 기백을 느낄 수 있을 것이다.
