Robert Therrien
at that time

Gana Art is pleased to present at that time, a solo exhibition featuring the work by Robert Therrien (1947-2019). Therrien is widely known for his large-scale sculptures and installations of enlarged utilitarian objects, which transform a scene of everyday life into a surrealistic landscape. His works have been highly acclaimed across the world and exhibited at numerous internationally renowned museums, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and Tate Modern. Therrien’s works are also held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Centre Pompidou, among many other institutions. This exhibition, which will be held at Gana Art Center from April 12 to May 5, 2022, is the first solo exhibition after the artist passed away in 2019. Gana Art aims to embody the ordinary but dreamy scenery that the artist pursued in the exhibition space.

No title (folding table and chairs, green) (2008) is a monumental sculpture consisting of a table and chairs, standing over three-meter high. The work, which is the highlight of this exhibition, invites the audience to the surreal scene of familiar objects, making them feel as if they were the main characters of “Alice in Wonderland”. This work perfectly replicates not only its appearance but also its function as furniture by perfectly copying ready-made products. The viewer is invited to walk around and underneath it to experience the sculpture physically, and, in turn, it transforms the viewer’s perception of the exhibition space. Due to its enormous size, the viewer is located inside the sculpture and becomes a part of the work, which makes it impossible to view and sense the entire sculpture at once. The viewer can, therefore, focus on their own movements and their physical existence, while experiencing a theatrical moment as if they became an actor on stage. Gana Art wishes to offer the audience in Korea an opportunity to fully experience the artistic world of Therrien and to have an experience of becoming the protagonist of the surreal yet beautiful scenery built by the artist.

가나아트는 미국을 대표하는 세계적인 현대 미술작가 로버트 테리엔(Robert Therrien, 1947-2019)의 개인전 《at that time》을 개최한다. 테리엔은 사물의 크기를 확대하거나 축소하여 일상 풍경을 생경한 광경으로 바꿔놓는 조각과 설치작품으로 널리 알려져 있다. 그는 로스앤젤레스현대미술관(로스앤젤레스), 레이나소피아국립미술관(마드리드), 테이트모던(런던) 등에서 개인전을 가졌으며, 그의 작품은 메트로폴리탄미술관(뉴욕), 뉴욕현대미술관(뉴욕), 휘트니미술관(뉴욕), 폴게티미술관(로스앤젤레스), 프랑스퐁피두센터(파리) 등 전 세계 유수의 미술관에 소장되어 있다. 가나아트 센터에서 2022년 4월 12일부터 5월 5일까지 열리는 본 전시는 2019년 작가의 작고 이후 열리는 첫 개인전으로, 가나아트는 현대조각사에 큰 획을 남긴 로버트 테리엔의 작업 세계를 대변하는 대표작을 선정하여 전시함으로써 작가가 추구했던 평범하지만 낯선 풍경을 전시장에 구현하고자 한다.

본 전시의 백미라 할 수 있는 3미터에 달하는 테이블과 의자로 구성된 <No title (folding table and chairs, green)>(2008)은 관객을 익숙한 사물이 만들어내는 초현실적인 광경에 초대하여, 마치 ‘이상한 나라의 앨리스’의 주인공이 된 듯한 감각을 느끼도록 한다. 기성품을 완벽하게 복제하여 외형은 물론 가구로서의 기능까지도 완벽하게 재현해 낸 이 작품은 실제 공간과 예술 영역을 연결해 환영을 연출하는 매개물로서 자리한다. 사람의 키를 훌쩍 뛰어넘는 크기로 인해 관람자는 조각 내부에 위치하게 되고, 이로써 조각 전부를 한 번에 인지할 수 없게 되며, 그 자신도 작품의 일부로 귀속된다. 이로 인해 관람자는 스스로의 움직임과 신체에 집중하게 되며, 마치 무대 위 배우가 된 듯한 연극적 순간을 경험하게 된다. 이처럼 항상 관객의 존재를 전제로 작업을 해온 로버트 테리엔의 개인전을 찾아온 이들이 작가가 구축한 아름다우면서도 초현실적인 광경의 주인공이 되는 경험을 통해 그의 작업 세계의 일부가 되는 체험을 할 수 있으리라 기대한다.
