For over four decades between his first solo exhibition in 1975 and his death in 2019, the American contemporary artist Robert Therrien (1947–2019) produced works of varying sizes without confining himself to any medium, whether drawing, photography, printmaking, or sculpture. During the 1970s and 80s, his art featured simple colors and abstract shapes, adopting motifs from childhood memories such as personal experiences and the subjects of animated Hollywood films. In the 1990s, he began working primarily with large sculptures, using Polaroid images he took as references for multiple perspectives on his objects while creating his works. Some of Therrien’s sculptures were quite small, but he was renowned for evoking a sense of strangeness in everyday objects that were transformed into massively scaled sculptures. This is evident in his most famous work, an enormous table and chair set that the protagonist of Gulliver’s Travels (1726) might have been seen while visiting the land of giants.
With their stripped-down forms and harmony achieved with their settings, Therrien’s works evoke parallels with the aesthetic approach of minimalism. But he also introduced a narrative quality to realize something original and poetic. His works elicit feelings of nostalgia through an approach present from the earliest stages of his career: transporting motifs drawn from personal memories into universally recognizable forms. The artist also produced sculptures by assembling kitchen items such as bowls and pots, discovering the aesthetic qualities in everyday objects while evoking familiar yet strange feelings of pleasure by recreating them in exaggerated sizes. Whether a Dutch door like the one at his grandfather’s house, a coffin alluding to memories of relatives who died young, a mirror symbolizing the artist’s mother, or a snowman also resembling a self-portrait, he made the viewer part of an artwork he presented in abstract form or at a scale beyond that of its concept rather than simply remaining confined to his memories. Invited by Therrien to unreal spaces within reality, the viewer walking and moving within feels as though he or she is entering a scene from a childhood fairytale.
