Psychic Road Trip

Gana Art is pleased to present Psychic Road Trip, a Brooklyn-based artist Sarah Kim (b.1994)’s first solo show in Korea. As a Korean-Canadian-American born in Nashville, Tennessee, the artist had long felt isolated with a sense of not belonging to any of these worlds. She began to create a landscape which is a combination of different places in her memories and explored her internal world as a remedy. Kim’s recent works show her unique artistic process of cutting, stretching, and recreating a three-dimensional image like a tapestry with old clothes she wore or donated from her friends. The old clothes which came to the artist at the end of their lives associate with different memories of the previous wearers. Kim’s landscape embodies her feeling of isolation, but the artist focused more on the joyful aspect with fantastical and hopeful motifs she has developed for a long time. In this solo show, Sarah Kim’s artworks full of personal memories and attachments capture the healing moments and solitude that the artist has experienced.

Psychic Road Trip

가나아트는 뉴욕 브루클린을 기반으로 독자적인 작업을 지속해 온 사라 킴(Sarah Kim, b.1994)의 개인전, 《Psychic Road Trip》를 개최한다. 테네시주 내슈빌(Nashville)에서 태어난 한국계 미국인으로 캐나다에서 오랫동안 거주한 사라 킴은 정체성의 혼란과 불확실성 속에서 작가의 기억을 기반으로 재탄생한 풍경화를 제작했다. 본 전시는 사라 킴의 국내 첫 번째 개인전으로, 낡은 옷을 이용한 그의 독자적인 표현 기법이 돋보이는 회화와 드로잉 신작을 공개한다. 사라 킴의 작업은 그가 입었던 옷이나 가까운 친구들로부터 기증받은 헌 옷을 잘라서 붙이고, 태피스트리처럼 실과 옷감을 엮는 수공예적 방식으로 화면을 재구성한 것이다. 헌 옷은 서로의 일상적인 기억을 공유하고 유년기의 특별한 추억을 떠올리게 하는 매개체로서, 그의 정체성을 구성하는 주요한 요소이다. 또한 그의 신작은 오랜 기간 그 어디에도 소속감을 느끼지 못한 작가의 심정을 담아내고 있지만, 작가는 이에 초점을 맞추는 대신 환상적이며 희망찬 모티브를 이용하여 현실의 아픔을 극복하고자 노력했다. 사라 킴의 개인적인 기억과 애착으로 가득한 화면은 끊임없이 내러티브를 생성하며, 작가가 그간 경험한 고독과 치유의 순간을 암시한다.
