Gana Art is pleased to present “In Circles”, a solo exhibition showcasing the captivating works by the international artist Chiharu Shiota. Born from the artist’s contemplation of existence and depicting the constant renewal and recurrence woven into the fabric of life, this exhibition invites audiences to embark on a symbolic journey through the human condition.

At the heart of the exhibition lies a monumental installation conceived as a visual manifestation of the perpetual cycles that govern our lives; “In Circles” weaves an intricate tapestry of interconnected threads suspended in space. The artist suggests that navigating the complexities of life often feels akin to a cyclical journey, with the continuous rotation of the world. From the moment of birth, human beings are thrust into an existence marked by uncertainty, oblivious to the twists and turns that life may unfold. Perhaps the circular motif emerges as a universal symbol, seemingly perfect in its infinite and eternal nature, yet paradoxically capable of ensnaring individuals within an inescapable trap. There, Shiota asserts that to break free from this cyclic existence necessitates relinquishing attachments and venturing into the unfamiliar, away from the comfort of the known.

Furthermore, Chiharu Shiota’s meticulous craftsmanship and profound artistic vision come to life in each piece, whether it’s the ethereal delicacy of smaller sculptures (State of Being) or the immersive grandeur of larger installations. Artist Shiota regards the sculptures (State of Being) as an extension of the installation art. In other words, each sculpture embodies her profound emotional investment; she pours her entire being into the work, reaching a point where she has nothing more to give. Moreover, layer upon layer of cut, tangled, and knotted threads accumulate, forming a captivating representation of the universe within a framed space.

In Circles

가나아트는 국제적인 작가 치하루 시오타의 개인전 《In Circles》을 개최한다. 본 전시는 존재에 대한 사색에서 출발하여 끊임없는 인생의 회복과 순환에 이르기까지 인간의 삶에 관련된 작가의 질문을 상징적으로 표현한 작품들을 선보인다.

전시장의 중심에 위치한 <In Circles>은 공간에 매달린 실을 서로 밀접하게 엮어내어 제작한 것으로, 삶을 지배하는 끊임없는 순환을 시각적으로 표현한 기념비적인 설치 작업이다. 작가는 종종 인생을 개척하는 과정을 지구의 자전과 함께하는 순환적인 여정으로 인식하였다. 인간은 삶의 우여곡절을 알 수 없는 불확실한 존재로 태어났다. 또한 원형 모티프는 무한하고 영원하다는 점에서 완벽해 보이지만, 역설적으로 사람을 벗어날 수 없는 덫에 가두는 형태이기도 하다. 시오타는 인간이 순환의 굴레에서 벗어나기 위해서는 익숙한 안락함에서 벗어나 낯선 모험을 하는 것이 필요하다고 말한다.

이번 전시는 <State of Being>과 같이 세심하게 묘사된 작은 조각부터 장엄하고 몰입감 넘치는 대형 설치 작업에 이르기까지 치하루 시오타의 장인정신과 심오한 예술적 시각을 생생하게 선보인다. 작가는 설치미술의 연장선상에서 조각 작품을 다룬다. 다시 말해, 개별 조각 작품에는 더 이상 소모할 것이 없을 지점까지 자신의 모든 것을 쏟아부은 작가의 심오한 감정이 구체화되어 있다. 이와 더불어 잘리고 엉키고 매듭지어진 실들은 겹겹이 쌓여 프레임 안의 우주를 매혹적으로 구현한다.
