Star Seekers

Gana Art is pleased to announce the opening of Kim Sun Woo (b. 1988)’s solo exhibition Star Seekers. Often referred to as “the artist of dodo,” Kim seeks to present a message about our freedom and limitless possibilities through an extinct bird species once native to the island of Mauritius. Applying vibrant colors and simple shapes using gouache paint, the artist unravels dodo bird’s interesting adventures. The curious dodo birds in Kim’s paintings often hide behind the dense jungle as if playing hide-and-seek with the viewers, then take a step into the unknown before you know it. They would cross the sky in balloons or light aircrafts, or stare at the aurora and stars in the night sky. While these birds are named after the word ‘stupid’(dodo) as Europeans mocked them, Kim considers they have infinite potential to dream and fly again as they once did.

The show, which invites the visitors to dodo’s hopeful journey to the new world, presents Kim’s recent paintings focusing on the stars and the dreams. The countless stars floating in the night sky has been corresponding to the concept of dream both in the East and the West. At a distance that seems at the reach of our fingertips, we reach for the twinkling stars and our long-cherished dreams but often forget about their existence before we realize it. The artist tells he was able to love his life because his artistic journey is about seeking for the faint traces of stars. By joining Kim Sun Woo’s journey with the dodo birds, we hope this show will be an opportunity to listen to the artist’s sincere encouragement who hopes to keep our dreams and ideals even in the harsh reality.

가나아트는 모리셔스 섬의 멸종된 도도새를 주제로 현대인의 자유와 무한한 가능성을 이야기하는 작가 김선우(b. 1988)의 개인전 《Star Seekers》를 개최한다. 구아슈 물감을 이용한 따뜻하고 선명한 색채와 단순한 형태감이 특징적인 그의 신작은 도도새의 모험을 풀어내는 탄탄한 스토리텔링을 통해 관람객에게 더욱 친근하게 다가간다. 김선우의 작품 속 호기심 많은 도도새는 관람객과 숨바꼭질하듯 잎사귀 뒤로 몸을 슬쩍 숨기는가 하면, 어느새 밖으로 나와 미지의 세계로 한 발짝 내디딘다. 이들은 때로는 풍선이나 경비행기를 타고 하늘을 가로지르거나, 밤하늘의 오로라와 별을 구경하며 다채롭게 노닌다. 김선우의 시선에서 이들은 오래전 낯선 유럽인들이 조롱했던 ‘바보 새’(dodo)가 아닌, 각자 자신만의 방식으로 다시금 자유로운 비행을 꿈꾸는 무한한 가능성을 가진 존재이다.

특히 이번 개인전 《Star Seekers》의 출품작들은 ‘별’과 ‘꿈’에 초점을 맞추며 새로운 세상을 향한 도도새의 여정에 관람객을 초대한다. 드넓은 밤하늘에 무수히 떠있는 별은 동서양을 막론하고 꿈이라는 개념과 자연스레 대응되는 존재이다. 손끝에 닿을 듯하지만 닿지 못하는 거리에서, 우리는 반짝이는 별과 오래전 간직했던 꿈을 향해 손을 뻗으면서도 어느새 그들의 존재를 망각하곤 한다. 김선우는 자신에게 작업이란 별을 좇는 일이며, 고개를 돌려 그것의 희미한 자취를 찾는 일을 업으로 삼았다는 사실만으로도 자신의 삶을 사랑하게 되었다고 말한다. 오늘날 세상에서 자취를 감춘 도도새를 캔버스에 화려하게 부활시킨 이번 전시가, 각박한 현실 속에서 꿈과 이상을 잃지 않기를 바라는 김선우 작가의 격려에 귀를 기울이는 자리가 되길 바란다.
