Today and Tomorrow

The ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement spread across the US, caused by the ‘murder of George Floyd’ on May 25 in 2020, in which an unarmed black man was killed by the excessive use of force of the police. It shows that the problem Martin Luther King Jr. faced in the past still maintains. Connected to racism against Asians occurred due to the COVID-19 and moreover to the movement struggling for hate crimes against Asians, the problem of racism has reminded us of the severity of this issue. Artists living in this era are raising their voices through artworks that fully reflect the injustice of the times. Gana Art recognizes the implications of the times through their works and presents a group exhibition, Today and Tomorrow showcasing the works from six artists, who capture the current era with their keen eyes. We hope that the visitors could sympathize with the challenge the artists are facing ‘today’ and agonize together about the problems of ‘tomorrow’ in this exhibition.

Today and Tomorrow

2020년 5월 25일, 경찰의 과잉진압으로 비무장 상태의 흑인 남성이 사망한 일명 ‘조지 플로이드 사건’을 계기로, 미국 전역으로 확산된 ‘Black Lives Matter’ 운동은 마틴 루터 킹이 직면했던 과거의 문제가 아직까지도 지속되고 있음을 방증한다. 인종차별의 문제는 코로나19의 확산으로 인해 발생한 아시아인에 대한 인종차별과 증오범죄에 대한 반대 운동인 ‘Stop Asian Hate’로 이어지면서, 여전히 잔존하고 있는 인종차별 문제의 깊숙한 뿌리를 우리에 일깨워주었다. 이와 같은 사회적 흐름에 미술가들은 부당한 시대상을 고스란히 반영한 작품을 통해 그들의 목소리를 높이고 있다. 이에 가나아트는 현시대를 명철한 시선으로 포착하고 있는 6인의 작가를 초청하는 그룹전인 《Today and Tomorrow》를 기획하여, 그들의 작품에 담긴 시대적 함의를 읽고자 한다. 이로써 이번 전시가 그들이 현재 마주하고 있는 오늘(today)의 과제에 공감하고, 미래(tomorrow)의 문제를 함께 고민해나가는 자리가 되길 기대한다.
