Flame Seed

Gana Art Hannam is pleased to present 《Flame Seed》, a solo exhibition by Yeesookyung (b.1963-) who is widely known for her unique ceramic sculptures made up of fragments of discarded ceramic pieces. Using diverse artistic media, ranging from drawing, painting, and sculpture to performance, the artist has conducted artistic experiments of incorporating disparate elements from different cultures or religions. Her unique artistic practice has been highly acclaimed both inside and outside Korea, and she was invited to the 57th Venice Biennale’s main International Art Exhibition in 2017. She has also shown her works at numerous internationally renowned institutions, including Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, Naples (Italy), Asia Society Texas Center, Houston (USA), Atelier Hermès, Seoul (Korea), Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei (Taiwan), and Museum Schloß Oranienbaum, Dessau (Germany). Yee’s works are also a part of significant private and public collections across the globe such as Los Angeles County Museum of Art (USA), British Museum (UK), M+ (Hong Kong), ARCO Collection, IFEMA (Spain), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (Korea), Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art (Korea).

The title of the exhibition 《Flame Seed》 is derived from Yee’s homonymous drawing series made up of small dots of cinnabar. The artist mentioned that she could find consolation while working on this series when the whole world was taken over by coronavirus in 2020. Like a flame seed that never gets extinguished, the <Flame Seed> series is a visualization of a fundamental force of life. The exhibition covers her oeuvre featuring different series such as <Translated Vase> made of discarded ceramic shards and <You Were There> composed of gilded stones. In addition, the artist expands further to encompass auditory perception in order to invite viewers to fully immerse themselves in her cathartic world. 「Kwansanyungma」, a traditional Korean song, was sung by Lee Hyun Ah for this exhibition and is played repeatedly in the gallery. Therefore, as an audiovisual installation, the whole space effectively conveys psychological catharsis. At the same time, it represents the meditative moment that Yee herself experienced through her artistic practice.
