Imperfection Equals…

Gana Art Nineone is pleased to announce a solo exhibition Imperfection Equals… of Seoul-based artist yoohee (b.1991-) who documents the utterly private scenes of ordinary life and paints onto her canvases with a unique twist. Since yoohee’s first solo exhibition with the opening of Gana Art Sounds in 2018, the artist has presented a series of paintings that blends her day-to-day activities with personal thoughts and emotions. Breaking away from her body of work that was centered around self-portraits, yoohee excludes herself from the screen and boldly captures imageries of the diverse wonders of the natural world by featuring stone walls, butterflies and snowy landscapes. In addition, the exhibition highlights a large number of small-scale sculptures in which yoohee works to mimic daily objects such as yogurt bottles, watches, chewing gum on the tongue and even chip crumbs and recreates in ceramics. The ceramic sculptures are involved with highly variable and unpredictable features resulted from the burning, baking and drying process inside a kiln. Thus yoohee’s creations derived from everyday plans and items present imperfect forms and shapes so that they are often encountered as unfamiliar objects placed in the gap between the daily and non-daily routine. Ultimately, by sharing her daily life, yoohee enables the viewers to discover the self-definition and natural meaning behind and to see life in abundance from a variety of perspectives.

Imperfection Equals…

가나아트 나인원은 평범한 개인사적인 고백을 특유의 개성있는 화풍으로 그려내는 유희(yoohee, 1991-)의 개인전, 《Imperfection Equals…》를 개최한다. 2018년도 가나아트 사운즈 개관전을 첫 개인전으로 장식하며 많은 주목을 받았던 유희는 일상적인 경험을 일기 형식으로 풀어내는 작업을 전개해왔다. 자화상을 주로 선보였던 그는 이번 신작에서는 자신의 모습을 화면에서 과감히 배제한 채 돌담이나 눈밭, 나비와 같은 자연의 모습을 화면에 담아냈다. 특히 이번 전시를 통해 공개되는 신작 중에서도 요구르트병과 시계, 혀 위의 껌부터 과자 부스러기까지 일상의 오브제를 소재로 빚어낸 세라믹 조각이 돋보이는데, 이는 가마 속에서 구워지고 그을리면서 예측 불가능한 변수들을 만나 탄생한 결과물이다. 그렇기에 불완전한 형태를 지닌 그의 작품은 일상의 오브제를 주제로 함에도 불구하고, 관람객들에 의해 낯선 오브제로 인지되곤 하며 일상과 비일상의 간극에 놓인다. 이에 가나아트는 본 전시가 관람객 스스로 작품에 내재된 의미를 발견하고, 삶을 다양한 시선에서 풍부하게 바라보는 사유를 촉발하는 자리가 될 것으로 기대한다.
