Yoon Kwang-cho

Gana Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Yoon Kwang-cho who creates inventive ceramic pieces that reflect aspects of nature based on the Korean buncheong techniques. After studying ceramics at Hongik University, Seoul, Yoon has reinterpreted the traditional ceramics and embraced originality that exploits the dynamic, expressive potential of buncheong. As a leading voice in Korean contemporary ceramics, Yoon is an internationally acclaimed artist and his works were collected by numerous renowned museums including Korea National Museum of Contemporary Art, Gwacheon, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The National Museum of Natural History, Washington D.C., San Fransico Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, British Museum, London, National Museum Victoria, Australia, and Royal Museum of Mariemon, Belgium. This exhibition is on view through May 29 with Yoon Kwang-cho’s comprehensive monograph published by Gana Foundation of Art and Culture during the exhibition period.

윤광조

가나아트는 자연의 아름다움을 한국적이면서도 독창적인 분청 기법으로 표현하는 급월당(汲月堂) 윤광조(尹光照, b.1946-)의 개인전, 《YOON KWANG-CHO》를 개최한다. 1973년 홍익대학교 공예학부를 졸업한 그는 자유롭고 즉흥적인 표현으로 한국 전통 도예를 현대적으로 재해석하며 자신만의 길을 개척해 왔다. “얽매이지 않는 본성의 자유”를 추구하는 윤광조는 물레로 둥근 형태의 도자기를 만드는 오랜 관습에서 탈피해 흙을 손으로 직접 주무르고 빚으며 도자 형태를 새롭게 변형하는 데 집중했다. 요컨대 출품작 <관 觀>(1985)은 초기의 조형 실험을, <혼돈 混沌>(2013) 등 근작은 상단 입구 부분을 활짝 갈라진 뿔로 표현하는 식의 한층 파격적인 변화를 보여준다. 이밖에 본 전시 출품작들 모두가 결코 한자리에 정체되지 않는 윤광조의 50년 도예 인생을 작은 파노라마처럼 펼쳐낸다.   

그의 작품은 현재 국립현대미술관 과천, 서울공예박물관 및 미국 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄미술관, 샌프란시스코 아시아미술관, 영국박물관, 호주 빅토리아국립미술관, 벨기에 마리몽로얄미술관 등 세계 유수의 미술관에 소장되며 그 가치를 인정받고 있다. 가나아트는 화집 《윤광조》(가나문화재단, 2022)의 출간에 맞춰 개최되는 본 전시를 통해, 윤광조의 손에서 현대적으로 재해석된 분청사기가 뿜어내는 아름다움과 에너지가 널리 전달되기를 바란다.
