Floating Truth

Gana Art is pleased to present 《Floating Truth》, a group exhibition featuring works by Nic Dyer (b. 1991); Betty Tompkins (b. 1945); Hyungji Park (b. 1977); yoohee (b. 1991); and Jooyoung Lee (b. 1990). The exhibition highlights distinctive visual languages and artistic practices of the five contemporary female artists who capture the moment of truth, as it floats up to the surface in our everyday lives. Dyer, who had her first solo exhibition in Asia at Gana Art Sounds in 2021, speaks about the ephemerality of human life through her still-life paintings. Tompkins, one of the key figures in feminist art in the US, provokes questions about female identity by placing words or phrases about women submitted by anonymous contributors over images that are evocative of objectified women. Park reveals her traces of ‘failures’ that inevitably occur during the working process, allowing the viewer to look beyond the work as a finished product; while yoohee creates scenes that are both familiar and unfamiliar and suggests that we look at our ordinary lives from various perspectives. Lastly, Lee explores the nature of language and our passive perception, questioning how it gets distorted or loses transparency after it leaves the mouth of a speaker. Through the lenses of the five artists, Gana Art hopes that the exhibition will provide an opportunity for the audience to search for a truth hidden beneath the surface with fresh eyes.

가나아트는 독창적인 조형 언어와 작품 세계로 국내외에서 활발하게 활동 중인 여성 작가 5인의 그룹전 《Floating Truth》를 개최한다. 작년 가나아트 사운즈에서 국내 첫 개인전을 가지며 많은 주목을 받은 닉 다이어(b. 1991), 미국 여성주의 미술에서 중요한 인물 중 하나로 꼽히는 베티 톰킨스(b. 1945), 그리고 서울을 기반으로 하여 국내외에서 활발하게 활동 중인 박형지(b. 1977), 유희(b. 1991), 이주영(b. 1990)의 작품으로 구성된 본 전시는 평범한 일상에서 진실이 수면 위로 떠 오르는 순간을 포착하는 이들의 예술 세계를 조명한다. 다이어는 인간의 감각적 욕망을 비판하고 쾌락을 추구하는 삶의 덧없음을 이야기하는 정물화를 선보이며, 톰킨스는 대상화된 여성을 상징하는 이미지와 텍스트를 함께 배치하여 억압된 여성의 정체성을 수면 위로 드러낸다. 한편, 박형지는 작업 과정에서 일어나는 ‘실패’의 흔적을 드러냄으로써 완성품으로 보여지는 작품의 이면을 마주하게 하고, 유희는 현대인의 일상에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 장면에 자신의 상상을 더하여 익숙한 삶에 대한 사유를 촉발한다. 마지막으로, 이주영은 언어 범람의 시대에 일어나는 오류와 간극을 표현하며 매 순간 발화되고 떠다니는 언어와 이를 받아들이는 수동적인 인식 과정에 의문을 제기한다. 이번 전시가 동시대 여성 작가들의 다채로운 예술 세계를 탐험하게 하고, 현상 이면에 가려진 본질을 들여다보게 하는 뜻깊은 자리가 되기를 기대한다.
