September to Remember
Gana Art is pleased to present September to Remember, a group exhibition showcasing five artists currently based on New York and Massachusetts. The featured artists include Aaron Johnson(b. 1975), Ernesto Burgos(b. 1979), Kadar Brock(b. 1980), Gosha Levochkin(b. 1986), and Margot Bird(b. 1982). Their recent artworks in the show are united by the focus on process, memory, and subconsciousness. Allowing the paint to flow freely and unexpectedly, Aaron Johnson paints mystical figures dwelling in his subconscious, transcendental world. Also, Ernesto Burgos and Kadar Brock apply repetitive and rather destructive process to create their unique visuality that crosses the boundaries between sculpture and painting/figurative and abstract. Gosha Levochkin, a Russian-American artist who witnessed the dynamic social and cultural change at his young age, visually implies diverse elements related to his childhood memory and experience. In Margot Bird’s figurative paintings, airplanes and submarines represent her own vehicle to navigate her memory and creative subconsciousness. September to Remember highlights the intimate relationship developed between each participating artists and their unique visuality and materiality. Through their distinctive artworks revealing powerful content and engagement, September to Remember invites the viewers to a visual journey full of possibilities and dynamic movements.
September to Remember
가나아트는 뉴욕 브루클린과 매사추세츠를 중심으로 활발하게 활동 중인 5인의 작가가 참여한 그룹전시 《September to Remember》를 개최한다. 올해 가나아트 보광에서 개인전을 가지며 많은 주목을 받은 애런 존슨(Aaron Johnson, b. 1975)은 물론, 에르네스토 버고스(Ernesto Burgos, b. 1979), 카다르 브록(Kadar Brock, b. 1980), 고샤 레보츠킨(Gosha Levochkin, b. 1986), 마곳 버드(Margot Bird, b. 1982)와 같이 이제까지 국내에서 전시되지 않은 다양한 작가들의 신작이 공개될 예정이다. 본 전시는 이들의 작품 중에서도 작가의 기억과 잠재의식을 강조하는 소재와 작업방식이 특징적인 출품작으로 구성되었다. 애런 존슨은 아크릴 물감의 예측 불가능하고 유동적인 효과를 실험하면서 그의 정신세계에 존재하는 괴기한 인물 형상들을 화면에 구현했다. 또한 에르네스토 버고스와 카다르 브록은 파괴적이고 노동 집약적인 작업과정을 거듭하며 회화와 조각, 추상과 구상의 경계에 있는 독특한 조형언어를 선보인다. 아울러 고샤 레보츠킨은 급작스러운 환경의 변화에 적응하던 어린 시절의 기억을 화면 곳곳에 녹여냈으며, 마곳 버드의 회화에는 작가의 잠재의식을 여행하는 수단으로 잠수함과 비행기가 반복적으로 등장한다. 이들의 작품을 선보이는 본 전시가 동시대 작가들의 무궁한 가능성과 그들의 역동적인 예술 세계를 탐험하는 유의미한 자리가 될 것으로 기대한다.
