Yeesookyung
Une Rose

Gana Art is pleased to present Une Rose, a solo exhibition featuring the work of Yeesookyung (b. 1963). Yeesookyung first made her mark on the world stage with her Translated Vase series, an ingenious way of reassembling discarded ceramic fragments by connecting them with gold leaf, and has since become a leading figure in Korean contemporary art. Yeesookyung’s artistic range is expansive, encompassing painting, sculpture, installation, video, drawing, and performance, and she continues experimenting with her work by incorporating disparate elements borrowed from multi-religious and multi-cultural sources into her artworks. In recognition of these attempts, she participated as an invited artist in the 57th VENICE BIENNALE exhibition in 2017 and has held solo exhibitions at world-renowned museums such as Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte in Italy, Asia Society Texas Center in the United States, Atelier Hermès in Korea, Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei in Taiwan, and Museum Schloß Oranienbaum in Germany. Yeesookyung’s work has been acquired by esteemed collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The British Museum, M+ Museum in Hong Kong, ARCO Collection in Spain, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea. The solo exhibition Une Rose will feature a new series of paintings titled Oh, Rose!, which explores the rose motif that the artist has been investigating recently.

The Oh, Rose! series, which began in 2022, focuses on the rose itself, which was only a backdrop for her previous work, Past Life Regression Painting. In this series, the rose is a motif that allows the artist to escape the constraints of space and time and move into the world of the unconscious, where they can create new narratives. Set against a mysterious abstract screen reminiscent of the aurora borealis, the blooming rose lies at the boundary between the previous and present life, the conscious and unconscious, the abstract and the figurative. Furthermore, the artist believes that the auspicious meaning of the rose, which in East Asian cultures has been likened to a beautiful and bewitching woman or a flower that blooms throughout the four seasons, will add a richer narrative to the series. For a considerable period, roses have been linked with the connotation of “四季長春” a type of benevolent wish that conveys the sentiment of perpetual warmth and comfort akin to that of spring. Through this, we can see that the series has connotations of psychological recovery and rebirth, as in Translated Vase, where the meaning of “regeneration” and “healing” is found in the artistic reinterpretation of cracked and useless ceramics. “To me, roses mean ‘light’ and ‘life’, and I hope that the energy created by the tiny lives blooming in the light of the aurora borealis can be conveyed,” says the artist, who hopes that the exhibition will be a place of healing filled with the vitality of roses. In accordance with the artist’s hope, Gana Art shares the hope that the exhibition will function as a site of recuperation, imbued with the vivacious essence of the rose.

장미 한 송이

가나아트는 도자기 파편을 금박으로 재조합하는 독창적인 방식의 <번역된 도자기> 연작을 통해 세계 무대에 이름을 알리고, 한국 현대미술을 대표하는 작가의 반열에 오른 이수경(Yeesookyung, b. 1963)의 개인전, 《장미 한 송이(Une Rose)》를 개최한다. 이수경은 회화, 조각, 설치, 영상, 드로잉, 퍼포먼스 등의 다양한 매체로써 광범위한 예술적 스펙트럼을 선보였으며, 다종교, 다문화 등에서 차용한 이질적인 요소를 하나의 작품 안에 혼종시키는 실험적 방식의 작업을 지속하고 있다. 이러한 시도를 인정받아 그는 2017년 제57회 베니스 비엔날레 본전시에 초청작가로서 참여했으며, 이탈리아의 카포디몬테 미술관, 미국의 아시아 소사이어티 텍사스 센터, 한국의 아틀리에 에르메스, 대만 타이베이 현대미술관, 독일의 오라니엔바움 미술관 등 세계적인 명성의 미술관에서 개인전을 열었다. 또한 로스앤젤레스 카운티미술관, 영국 박물관, 홍콩 M+미술관, 스페인 이페마 아르코 컬렉션, 국립현대미술관 등이 그의 작품을 소장하고 있다. 이번 개인전은 그의 다채로운 작업세계 중에서도 작가가 근래 들어 천착하고 있는 장미 모티프의 신작 회화, <오, 장미여!> 연작을 집중적으로 조명하는 자리가 될 것이다.

2022년도부터 새롭게 시작한 <오, 장미여!> 연작은 전작인 <전생 역행 그림>의 배경에 지나지 않았던 장미 그 자체에 집중한 회화로, 여기에서 장미는 시공간의 제약에서 벗어나 자유로운 설화(說話)가 가능한 무의식의 세계로 나아가게 하는 모티프이다. 오로라를 연상케 하는 신비로운 추상 화면을 바탕으로 탐스럽게 피어난 장미는 전생과 이생, 의식과 무의식, 추상과 구상의 경계에 놓여있다. 더 나아가 이수경은 동아시아 문화권에서 아름답고 요염한 여인에 비견되거나 사계절 내내 피는 꽃이라는 이유로 ‘사계장춘(四季長春)’의 길상적 의미를 지녀온 장미의 의미가 해당 연작에 더욱 풍부한 서사를 더할 것이라 말한다. 사계장춘은 “일년 내내 봄과 같이 따뜻하고 편하게 지내라”란 일종의 축복의 의미인데, 이로부터 해당 연작이 ‘금’이 가 쓸모없어져 버린 도자기를 ‘금(金)’으로 이어 붙여 예술적으로 재번역한다는 데서 ‘재생’과 ‘치유’의 의미를 찾았던 <번역된 도자기>에서와 같이 심리적 회복과 발원의 의미가 담겨있음을 발견하게 된다. “나에게 장미는 ‘빛’이자 ‘생명’을 의미해요. 오로라 빛 속에 피어나는 작은 생명들이 만들어내는 에너지가 그대로 전달되었으면 좋겠어요”라는 작가의 말처럼 본 전시가 장미의 생명력으로 그득 찬 치유의 장이 되길 바란다.
