Jamunbak Museum Project

The regions of Gugi-dong, Buam-dong, Sinyeong-dong, Pyeongchang-dong and Hongji-dong outside the Jahamun Gate are referred to as ‘Jamunbak’ meaning the outside the Jahamun Gate. The ‘Jamunbak’ neighborhood is home for many artists including painters, sculptors, novelists, and musicians. This unprecedented phenomenon was a result of attractive qualities of the region, where it is not only close to the busy world inside the gate but also to the serene and peaceful atmosphere just outside the gate.

Gana Foundation for Arts and Culture, Jamunbak Cultural Forum, and the Jongno-gu Office recognize the cultural value of Jamunbak and aim to further enhance its artistic significance in an effective direction. Most notably, the field of fine art is a valuable asset, along with artworks themselves and the ateliers in which works are produced since they contribute to the establishment of a museum and even a cultural complex.

Gana Foundation for Arts and Culture and Jamunbak Cultural Forum is pleased to announce a group exhibition at Gana Art Center in Pyeongchang-dong, which will be carried out as a mid to long term project. This is the first step in promoting the cultural resources and value of Jamunbak, and has a potentiality which leads to more artist’s contribution and participation in the future, resulting in the expansion of other various forms of cultural facilities.

자문밖 미술관 프로젝트

자하문 밖의 종로구 구기동, 부암동, 신영동, 평창동, 홍지동을 한데 아울러 ‘자문밖’이라 부른다. 이 일대에는 화가, 조각가, 소설가, 음악가 등 많은 예술문화인들이 거주하고 있다. 이들은 자하문 안 동네에서 느껴지는 서울의 번잡함에서 벗어나, 문 밖으로만 나서면 고요한 여유가 찾아온다는 자문밖 동네 특유의 매력에 시나브로 스며들어 정착하기 시작했다. 특정 지역에 문화예술인들이 밀집된 이러한 현상은 유례를 찾기가 어렵다.

이에 가나문화재단, 자문밖문화포럼, 종로구청은 이곳이 지닌 예술적 가치에 주목하고 이를 계승하여 문화예술의 발전적 방향으로 나아가고자 한다. 특히 미술 분야는 작품은 물론이고 작가의 작업실인 아틀리에 또한 유형 자산으로서의 가치가 높다. 아틀리에는 향후 미술관 건립으로도 이어질 수 있다는 측면에서, 공간 그 자체에 상당한 보존 가치가 있다.

가나아트센터는 이번 전시를 통해 가나문화재단과 자문밖문화포럼이 주관하는 <자문밖 미술관 프로젝트>의 여러 작가군을 소개하며 이를 중장기 프로젝트로 확장시키고자 한다. <자문밖 미술관 프로젝트> 전시는 자문밖 동네의 예술적 자원과 가치를 알리기 위한 첫걸음으로, 이번 시도가 향후 더 많은 작가들의 호응과 참여를 이끌어내며 미술관 및 다양한 형식의 문화시설 유치로 이어지기를 기대한다.
